Hey guys, does anyone have experience buying an alberta truck and bringing it home to BC, and if so, what will I have to go through and will it be a problem to get insurance on it when in alberta? Any idea on the cost of the insurance, vi, etc. What are they looking for on the vi? I just bought an alberta truck, now I got to get it home and don't know what the ins and outs are of how to do it without messing anything up. I don't want to get out there and find out that the insurance will cost me $1000 for 30 days or something ridiculous, or that I didn't bring some sort of piece of paperwork home with me that I need to register it here:help

thanks,
CS

I bought my truck in Calgary a couple years ago. This is what I had to do...
Get a Alberta "Binder" insurance policy for the day you plan on driving it home You get this while you are in Alberta. The Alberta "binder" policy will only cover you to the B.C border so you will also need one from ICBC. Make sure you get the one from ICBC BEFORE you leave, this will insure your truck while in B.C. Then take it to any facility that does vehicle inspections, once it passes inspection you can register it here.

I bought my Jeep in Red Deer last month and this is what I did...

1. Go to autoplan office and get a Binder for Owner's Interim Certificate of Insurance before going to AB. I got a weeks insurance for $85.

2. When you go to AB to pick up your vehicle, go to the nearest registry office and get a In Transit permit. I paid $24.45 and the permit was good for 7 days.

3. Get VI and then go to autoplan agent to register.

Make sure you have the AB registration from the previous owner with the back section signed. Getting the registration is not a problem if it's a private sale, but may not be possible if buying a used vehicle from an AB dealer. I talked to ICBC before I bought my truck and they made it very clear to me that I would not be able to register the vehicle in BC if I did not bring in the AB registration from the previous owner.

The dealer I bought my Jeep from had to go through a bit of a process so that I would have the vehicle registration at the time of sale. From what I have been told used vehicles on dealer lots in AB are not registered like they are in BC, so they do not have the registrations.

Make sure you specifically ask what type of driving the binder covers. I don't know if it's different inter-provincially but I just did this from the States and it only covered driving from the pickup point to my home and that is it. When the truck was in BC I had to buy separate insurance to cover the drive from home to inspection.
