Re: Opinions where to put a Radiator???? help!!

Is this a picture of your current rad and engine set up?

Re: Opinions where to put a Radiator???? help!!

my 10 cents. You need a 4 core high density rad - preferably aluminum with a good shroud that fits within a 1/2 inch to the fan and a good clutched fan. For a fan set up the very best is a fan and clutch from and Cadillac 500cid motor. I tried electric fans and they couldn't come close to what the caddy fan and clutch could do. I could climb 97c in the summer with a Land Cruiser on 44's pulling a trailer with a 383 stroker and not go over 205. The caddy set up was the key but it wouldn't do as well without the 4 core rad. I had tried a electric black max first but was extremely disappointed that it couldn't cut it. Adapting the fan and clutch to what you have can't be to hard and you can get that stuff at napa etc.

Oh and if you spend any time over 1250 degrees you will be doing damage to your motor. I could hit 1200 between lights in my last truck so be care full - it doesn't take long to spike the heat depending how it is set up. Be sure to install your pyrometer before the turbo and not after as your reading will be lower than actual where the parts you want to protect are.

That is the rad it has an electric pushing from the front, transmission cooler in front and engine oil cooler on the side.

Re: Opinions where to put a Radiator???? help!!

maybe the rad is sitting too low and youre getting an air pocket. see if you can blead the system. either from the highst point or put the truck on a sloped area so you can have the air pocked get to the point where you can blead it out.

Lean engines run hot. Do I really have to cite a source?

Ok, here ya go:

http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/000858.html
http://www.modelgeeks.com/Uwe/Forum....or-Engine-Temp

And of course, I had a turbo car myself that had a broken wastegate dump valve.. which causes the turbo to spool up beyond factory specs. At exactly 13psi you could watch the temp gauge take off.

Re: Opinions where to put a Radiator???? help!!

My understanding is that rich diesels engines run hot (opposite of gasoline).

I am pretty sure that it is not a mixture problem (I will install a EGT gauge to confirm). Have not adjusted the pump and the car the engine came out of ran super cool no problems (this engine is not making power it, it is stock, stock tuned, if I wanted power the OM617 is not it (at least in NA where no one tunes them).

RADIATOR IS TO SMALL (also the fan was out due to an electrical problem).

I want a set up that if I have no electrical once started it could drive for ever (the true advantage of diesel motors).

It also needs to climb 97C out of Kelowna in 40 degree weather (not fast, just not overheating).

I am looking for a way to add more radiator.

On the roof designed to look like a wind deflector allows me to by a huge cheep radiator that once rolling needs no external cooling (Stock radiator is behind a skid plat, but the lowest point at the front NOT AN IDEAL SET UP).

I have big fears of custom 4 core aluminum rad being the lowest point.

Some one else suggested putting the radiator on a slight angle mostly horizontal on the cab and make it look like a 60's airconditioner unit on a rig. Or a refer unit on the camper.

Keep the thoughts coming.

Don't know if there is something strange/special about diesels but it's my understanding that when you throw more oxygen at a fire it burns hotter no matter what fuel you are using, gas, diesel, wood, salami...

There is something different about a diesel....

In a gasoline engine there is a throttle plate that regulates the flow of air into the cylinders. On (most every) diesel there is no such restriction. If it weren't for the turbo and valves, you could put a rat in the intake and have it come out the exhaust. The flow of air is completly un restricted.

The only thing that governes the speed of a diesel is the quantity of fuel that is injected into the cylinder to be burnt. The more fuel the faster you go. the less fuel the slower you go.

It's as simle as that.

just so you know for the next interweb topic, you cant really run a diesel lean like a gas motor. however you can run it too rich and increse the comustion/exhust temps. take it from gear head diesel guys.

Re: Opinions where to put a Radiator???? help!!

How much pressure would be required to push the coolant up a column 6ft high?

At least the heat of coolant will help in delivery to the radiator on the roof. I have a radiator from a 1980 Ford F250 that had a 400 in it and I'm sure it's a 4 core and fairly new. I'll measure it up and ask the old man what he wants for it.

Depending on the airflow over the top of the cab you may need to build a scoop to direct the air into the radiator. I could see that being a low pressure area when the flat face of the cab gets up to speed on the highway.

Re: Opinions where to put a Radiator???? help!!

You guys may have thought of this and ruled it out already but maybe run a second radiator just behind/in front of the stock one..?

Re: Opinions where to put a Radiator???? help!!

I see a rad, what looks to be a crossmember and an oil cooler then the engine.

Looks to be at least a foot of room between the rad and the front of the engine.

Relocate that huge oil cooler from in front of the engine to the back of the cab, place a fan on your engine and make a custom fan shroud(sp)

Ok, maybe not that simple. Why have the oil cooler in front like that?
