    Question Ashlu Creek

My B in Law is coming in from back east and I usually take him out for some sightseeing/wheeling and I need some input. Looks like I'm heading up to Ashlu to try and get to the icefields. I've looked at the thread from last summer (http://bb.bc4x4.com/showthread.php?s...ht=ashlu+creek) and that's where we're heading. I'm wondering if anyone has been up there lately and can point out some side stuff, I'd like to do some climbing/rocks or anything other than just doing FSR's all day. Anyone help a guy out?...

I was just up there a couple weeks ago again. The spot where you could access the glaciers had a nasty slide with some big rocks. You can still hike up to the glacier bottom and up to the top of the glacier. As far as rock climbing trails, there are a lot of off-shoot trails around there; there's tons of exploring to do in that area...

Hey, thanks for the update. We're heading up there on Saturday to have a look around. From what you've said I assume that after crossing the creek we could start trying spur roads for the fun stuff and the point to access the ice is the same as on your previous map that was posted, sound right?

Yeah the access point for the glacier is still the same, but unless you have 35's or bigger, some lockers and decent protection, that slide will have you stopped in your tracks and you wont be able to continue on that FSR any further.

    Glacier

You mean the avalanche that comes down almost every year just past the bridge and up the hill then melts?

The owner of the mine by the way on the other side of the valley doesn't want anybody in there.

Hikers and mountain climbers walk in and go up the side road to access Mt. Jimmy Jimmy, but in an e-mail conversation with one of them once, I was told the watchman chased them away with a gun and a dog.

I said that was illegal. Even if you are trespassing nobody can threaten your life.

They called the cops and he argued he felt threated by the hikers' dog threatening his dog.

I have run into the guy up there myself. I got his phone number and asked if I could go mtn. biking across the gate one day.

He gave me the number, but said "We don't really want anybody in there."

well yeah the Ashlu mine which is behind a gate is owned by Johan T Shearer and yes you arent allowed in there, thats why the gate is there. But where the glacier is, it's across the creek and is available for access to everyone. The only place where you arent allowed to go, is beyond the gate on Ashlu main FSR and as you can see, there isnt much past the gate except an access route to mount Jimmy Jimmy. But if you have a FMC, you are allowed to go as far past the gate as you like.

I am actually a mountaineer, and have climbed Mount Jimmy Jimmy as a winter ascent. It is accessed via Pakosha Creek, or Marten Creek via the Ashlu Main. The slide that washes out A735/700 every year comes off Mount Buck. The glaciated area you're referring to is the Wood Group. We climbed Pykett and Charlie Peaks last winter as well, but we skied in from the Ashlu Main as it was obviously snowed in.

I climbed Ashlu Mountain via Shortcut Creek last week and checked out that washout on A700, it is nasty. Has anyone driven past this point? What is the road like past the washout? I was thinking with a bit of work I could have coaxed my TJ on 33's over it.

The glacier on the Wood Group is moderately crevassed so anyone thinking of getting on it better have a rope, glacier gear and crevasse rescue skills.
    TJ with uh.......stuff

Well if we are thinking of the same place, I drove it last year past the washout point because it wasnt nearly as bad last year and the FSR just ends going wayyy up to the top of the mountain with a great view....

that whole area is a real nice place actually.
