Getting a brand new travel trailer. Anyone buy one stateside?

So I'll probably be picking up this. http://www.countryrvkamloops.ca/rv/n...5d2b442aaa.htm

Anyone ever buy one in the US? Anyone buy a new one lately? Any experience with hideouts?

Cheap crap, poorly built. Its going to leak in the corners. You'll have rot in the floor and the roof within a year unless you have someone who knows what they're dong reseal it properly ahead of time.

Its not just the Hideout, they all do that.

trust me, listen to what Dan has to say. the stuff he's told me about fixing that was very new is shocking. whatever you buy go get it checked and sealed by somebody that gives a hoot like Dan, dosnt matter if its brand new with a fancy warranty, get it re-sealed. my father in-law built rv's off and on for a good chunk of his life for a few different companies, he says the companies that build them could do a much much better job sealing them up while building them but they just don't care.

seal it up before it goes to crap, remember the warranty work is done by the company that built it leaky to begin with.

Well this is the kind of advice I am looking for. It's actually this one we are looking at, posted wrong link. http://www.countryrvkamloops.ca/rv/n...46cf103d6b.htm

So what would I need to do to seal up the roof? Where do they leak? Are you an RV guy Dan?

My step dad said the same thing about how bad new RV's are seals, most leak from the factory. Keep in mind that just because the roof is warantee for 5 years, doesn't mean they will gaurentee the seams won't leak, mght only be the roof itself. The floor might also be waranteed for life, but check the fine print, they probably don't cover normal ware or neglect, which not fixing a leak would be neglect. Usually by the time you notice a leak, it's too late.

I would agree with dan, whatever one you get, get it professionally sealed, keep it clean(roof included), check for cracks or gaps in any of the seams periodically,

    Yes I'm an Rv guy.

They'll leak in the corners where all the moldings come together.

The dealers in the states are able to help you export the trailer to canada and get all the paperwork ready. A few friends have done it and it's relatively simple. It does take a couple of days for the paperwork to clear so you can cross the border.
As Dan says they are all crap and will leak unless you go with a really high end unit. The best thing to do is learn how the roof and corners seal and inspect them at the beginning and end of every season. It's not a bad idea to re-seal potential problem area's every year and a full re-seal every other year.

Re: Getting a brand new travel trailer. Anyone buy one stateside?

So I am assuming the roof sealing caulking stuff from the RV place itself would be the best then, not generic crappy tire stuff, and not the roll on stuff that covers the whole roof. The camper does come with free yearly roof inspections but it sounds like I need to go above and beyond that, start and end of season, to protect my investment if I want it to outlast the (very long)payments on it. So I will be going up on the roof before I sign anything. I wonder if I was to point this out before buying if they would fix it......

And it sounds like a tarp every winter is a must. You don't see too many of the new ones with tarps over, just the old ones. Thanks Dan, this is why I love this forum, very helpful.

Yes the good caulk designed for RV's is what you need. It's pricey. Tarps strapped tightly over the roof can cause issue's because they don't "breathe". The covers designed for trailers are better but some people do not like using those either for the same reasons. A lot of my friends use the portable shelters over winter but snow and wind can damage them quickly. Providing the trailer is properly sealed it should be fine uncovered.

I wouldnt travel much gravel roads with it either, they really leak fast after bumping along logging roads!
I would look at bigfoot trailers, you still need to reseal windows and roof vents but the 2 piece fiberglass construction is best in my opinion!

Yea I'm sure rough roads would be hard on them. It's going to see some of that, but I'll take my time. So I need an equalizer hitch, any difference between the reece and the princess auto?
