Camper on a 1/2 ton pick up?

I was having a discussion with my friend on the phone today about it. He has a 89 F150 and uses it with a older camper often. I was under the impression that it is illegal. I know I read it here somewhere? Do they make newer light weight campers for 1/2 tons?

as long as he is not exceeding the axle rating or tire rating on his truck it's legal.

I have an 8 foot camper that weighs 653kg or 1440 pounds. (from the dataplate)

    Built in 1983

So, what's the carying capacity of a half ton?

you would have to check the door tag on the actual pickup since different model years and manufacturers vary greatly.

Just doing a quick Google search numbers ranged from 1300-1600 lbs. That does not include driver or passengers. So with gear and people a 1/2 ton would be way over loaded for a camper.

It's almost certainly over it's GVW. My '98 Dodge 1500 had a payload of 1,100 pounds. Most 1/2T would be around that. The camper I know that MAY go on a 1/2T are the 4Wheel Camper popups.

There is no shortage of campers that are light enough to carry on a half ton.

A payload number you get off the internet obviously isn't an accurate guide, the real numbers you need are the actual weight of the truck and the GVWR, as Brian46 stated, as long as its under the GVWR and axle weight rating, its legal.
