    broke a birf...

when i pulled it out i found that the inner axle seal and housing becamed mashed together when it broke and spun around in there. should i look for a new housing or try to fix this? im thinkin of pulling the 3rd and pounding it out from the inside of the axle then maybe get it re drilled? is this seal that important, my gear oil has always made it into the knuckles in this axle

    thanx.

    heres some pics

i have a buddy with a set of smurfeilds he will probably part with.i woud say if you are thinking about upgrading to chromolly longs then get it fixed.i think the gear oil would thin out the grease in your bell and possibly wear out the joint quicker.i had gear oilleaking into my knuckle and was concerned about this happening.it would be a drag to have to replace your whole diff.your runnin 37s arnt ya??from what ive seen once we got into 36"tires birfs were breakin all the time.ive been running smurfs for a few years now with no issues but would still like to upgrade to longs. buy marlin crawler seals..they seem to be the best quality.

clean it up with a die grinder. Just take off sharp edges. Put new seal in. Run as is. I would upgrade to Longfields for sure though. I have and I LOVE THEM!!! no more breaky.

My bro was way worse than that and he still ran it.

so i guess smurfs arnt much better than stock eh??are the dirty 30s really as good as longs?i dont know anybody with em and havnt been hearing anything good or bad about them...just the usual trail gear trash talk.i know my friends havnt been thrilled with the front leaf springs but all their other products seem good.i dont drive like a mental case(usually)but its a nice feeling to be overbuilt!when i get my wcb/injury bs dealt with i would like to take a run out to tarans place..still havnt been there.how much was that bumper on yer rig?

i heard the dirty 30s are better than longs? both have the lifetime guarantee so i chose the cheaper option. the bumper came on my truck when i bought it.
