    Land Rover Rebuild

Been pretty quiet around here, since right after I joined, my truck died. Throwout bearing went, then I discovered the frame was almost rusted right through on the driver's side. So, I decided to rebuild it, starting with a new galvanized frame.

    What started it all:

    Tweaked in shipping:

Axles brace rusted through, as well as a hole rusted right through the diff cover:

Fixed the frame and paint in zinc to prevent rust forming in any cracks of the galvanizing:

"New" axle to replace the rusted one; gotta love POR-15:

Two different brake drums, but they work:

    Assembly:

    Wheels before:

    Wheels after:

    Doors being fixed/welded/painted:

... And that's where I am, more or less... stuck waiting for more parts to finish the front axle before I keep tearing things down. It will be getting 34" Narrow Super Swampers, and a couple other updates mostly aimed at making it quieter, smoother, and more pleasant to drive around town. Otherwise, a cage (not exo'ing it though, I want to keep the original look), rock sliders, and an 8274 out front methinks. Oh, and a rooftop tent and roofrack.

Sweet build! looks like it will be pretty nice, and classic. What motor?

It's going to be retaining the stock 2.25L gas engine. I'm doing a compression test on it tomorrow, fingers are crossed!

Oh, and Andy, I'm in Tsawwassen. I see you on Roverlanders too; did you figure out what you're going to do with the D90 yet?

Hahaha I would, but it's been under cover since the ownership of my first digital camera. Needs a transmission, which I have... but I haven't got the time to replace the old one yet. Soon. It's a 74 XJ12L. Good eye.

Nope... still undecided.... it's too modified to be a DD and not modified enough to be a full on crawler... and I'm still on the hunt for challenging local trails to explore.

    Re: Land Rover Rebuild

Alright, so I have actually been making progress, but I haven't had a chance to upload pics. Here's where I sit today:

Pretty impressed by the zinc oxide primer; stuff smells friggin terrible but it adheres to the Birmabright panels pretty well.

And that's the rat's nest of wiring that I found when I was pulling the bulkhead apart. Lovely.

Rad support with speed holes. Has since been welded back up, POR15-ed, and khaki-ed:

That was the top of my pedal box. I think I may have found the source of my wet feet.

And here's the source of my friends' wet feet. Galvanic corrosion caused by steel supports under the aluminum floor.

The corroded sections of the channels are where the pressed steel supports rested on the aluminum.

New aluminum floor epoxied down atop the old one, just before the rivets were popped in.

Getting ready for more zinc oxide and khaki.

Aren't things nice looking when they come back from sandblasting?

    I'm getting there...

Nice build! It's a late 90's model, right? I mean judging by the state of corrosion and the wiring, I doubt that any older LRs are left

Hahahaha I know; after 35 years of service it's almost as bad a '95 4Runner!

Truth be told, there's some good repairs from its military days, but there's no getting around the fact that it was in Northern Alberta, and salty water just speeds up galvanic corrosion... to say nothing of regular rust. But hey, by the time I'm done, it should be ready to do another 35 without even breaking a sweat.

The British genes in me almost made me buy a '99 Disco, hindsight is I shoulda grabbed it as it was pretty decently equipped and kitted out (you know, all the stuff the factory forgot to fix before it got sold). Some day!
