View Full Version : Toyo: open Country or M55?

I won't pretend to know any thing about Toyo tires, but it's hard to tell much from the pics on their site.
I want a year round tire that's decent in snow (especially decent on ice), and good in every other category (highway, off-road, mud). Basically something compared to BFG AT/TAs.
I think I got it down to Open Country ATs or M55s, and the M55s look like they have more siping, which would be good for ice...
Thoughts appreciated!

I agree, on a 1 ton truck i would recommend the m55 but on a Dakota the a/t's are nice. I've driven a dakota with them in the snow and it did pretty well! I've heard good things about the toyo m/t as well but never driven with them as they are kinda pricey ... good luck with your tire choice

They're both mud and snow rated, but in Terrace I worry about ice, not snow.... Which would be best on ice?

Check out the Nokian tires. Kal-Tire carries them. They are very good on ice. Seems those crazy Fins know a thing or two about driving on ice.

I have the Toyo MT's and they're the best mud tire I've ever owned by far....
My friend owns a tire shop and all he tries to sell is toyo's for any vehicle... he swears by them

I didn't want to buy a winter set though... I need new tires for year round, then I'll get two studded ones if it's really bad this winter (I haven't looked at the Farmer's Almanac for this year).
Terrace has the worst winter road servicing, cheap bastards... They wait until it gets bad until they clear, they only use sand, no de-icer, and they raise the plows to save the roads, resulting in a nice thick layer of skating rink to drive on. Damn contract work! I miss the cushy winter road conditions of the Lower Mainland... :(

i had the toyo m55`s on my diesel, i liked them better than the bfg allterrains that i have now, they were really good in the snow, but there kinda loud, if noise dosent matter then get the
toyo open country mtr`s

The M-55s are pretty pricey I have them on the back of my 95 F-450 I'am glad I didn't buy them they came with the truck.
I wouldn't run the M-55s on a truck lighter than a 3/4 ton you can get them in 8ply. They are a commercial light truck tire and they do howl a little bit.
If your really concerned about snow and ice traction get a separate set of dedicated snow tires on rims. Who know what winter is going to be like in B.C.

Well just to be completely different, I got Michelin LTX A/Ts... Long story... But I hear Michelins are good, so I hope they stand up to my vigorous driving habbits...
