View Full Version : What do all you tenters sleep on?

Hey just wondering about what everyone uses for mattresses in their tents. I have an air mattress that I really don't care for. Used to always just make a pad out of wool blankets etc. but as I get older my body is beginning to reject that idea lol...got to buy something before the next outing so any recommendations would be great.

after a dozen or so beers, even the most jagged of rocks can put those memory foam mattresses to shame.

I use one of those self inflating/deflating roll up jobs. They are pretty comfy and don't take up a lot of room. I used an air mattress once, but didnt put enough ground protection down and woke up absolutey freezing.

The really thick air matresses are OK for sleeping on the floor in the family room of your house but suck for camping. Your body heat just gets sucked out of you and you end up freezing all night. I always laugh at the guys who bring them camping because they think they are going to be really comfy all night, but are popsicles by morning. I use the thin self inflating therma-rest matresses. They keep your hips and shoulders off the ground which in most cases is all you need. Plus you also keep your body heat better.

That works great when you go to bed, but when you wake up on a rock, and your still too hungover to get out of bed its damn miserable! I used an air matress from crappy tire when I tented, now I bring my camper!

I bring a 3" thick piece of foam. It takes up a bit of room but is great for sleeping on.

I use a queen size air bed. I put a blanky down, then the bed, then another blanky, then I climb in my -10 Coleman sleeping bag; always comfy and toasty warm in the colder weather.

an air matress, or I just pass out drunk in my truck, i`m like a human inferno when it comes to body heat so I dont wake up freezing on my matress.

Thanx for all the input. I'm pretty well versed in passing out drunk in the tent, problem is when I wake up it always seems like someone changed the ground underneath me lol....I have one of the big thick air mattresses but it offers no support and seems to magnify any imperfection in the ground under it. I think the pump that came with it doesn't have enough jam to get it inflated to a point where it would be firm enough. Probably going to try one of the thinner self inflating units as space in the truck is a bit of an issue for me, truck is always full as it is with an 85lb dog and a gf and a boat and...well y'all get the idea.

the one I had that was electric was a pos, it inflated fine I suppose but couldn`t stuff enough air into it to make it firm, even with two people on it, the one I have now uses a foot pump so I can stomp the hell out of it and make sure its full :laugh

i bought a coleman air mattress and it came with a hole in it. doesnt matter tho cuz ive never made it to my tent to actually sleep on it. i got kicked outta merrit, at stave i passed out in a creek, and 20 mile bay i fell asleep at the door to my tent... its amazing how comfy the rocks are after a good ngiht of drinking haha.

After the last four or five times camping in a tent I had enough. I would wake up to a de-flated mattress, a wet head/ feet from condensation and having to re-set up the tent when I get home just to air it out is a friggen hassle.

I bought a bedrug for my pickup and picked up a really decent used fiberglass canopy and still didn't break the $500 mark. I had a 2" thick foam collecting dust that I sleep on in the truck. Can you say:boring :boring :boring :boring

Here's a pic of myMy set up (http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/2/web/2222000-2222999/2222979_60_full.jpg)

I used to use pine boughs and build up a nice bed then place my tent over it. It makes for a real nice base to sleep on and usually my sleeping bag had enough extra padding to make it real comfortable.
Nowadays I just use my motorhome - It is horrible though....last weekend I woke up and had a hard time finding the channel changer. Eventually I found it in the ruffles of my down duvet but boy for a while there did I ever feel like I was roughing it !!!

The key to using memory foam is to have conventional foam underneath for support. Memory foam is just a coddler and will compress until there is next to nothing between you and the ground.

Air mattresses work great, you just have to make sure you have lots of layers between you and the mattress or you freeze your ass off.

Use the same rule of thumb for when sleeping on ice or snow... 3 layers below for every 2 layers above.

Don't get the self inflating mattresses for the reason mentioned above.. they don't fill up firm enough. Instead buy a $20 battery powered pump to fill it most of the way, then do the rest the old fashioned way. Also.. it's worth it to spend the money on a quality mattress. The $60 ones have alot thicker plastic and won't develop leaks nearly as easily as the $15 walmart ones.

When camping in the Sami I got one of those self-inflating mats and a -18 sleeping bag (its padding enough in itself), but usually I camp in the back of my pickup.

i got one of those cheapo ozark queen size (or was it full size?) matresses from welfaremart. i think it was $40 or $50. comes with a foot pump which actually can fill it up nice n firm. suede top too so you n your blankets etc dont go slidin all over the place. i wasnt expecting too much, but it actually works quite well. very thick & durable material.

highly recommended :beer

Ya that's actually the one I have...maybe I need to get a foot pump, mine came with an electric pump that plugs into the cig lighter or into 120v at home. Guess I'll try the blankets under it as well, camping is almost over so I may as well give it one more go. Thanx everyone

Air mattresses suck. Cold and no lumbar support!!! I rather sleep on the ground with something wrapped around my waist for support. "Self" inflating mat, although I find you still have to blow it up a bit if you want more loft. Even better if it's cold, bury some rocks from the fire ring (but the fire is now out, duh) under you. Mmmm... toasty!

But what I really want to find is one of those old hunter's heavy duck sleeping bags... They're bulky but who cares... Everything now adays is down and the synthetic fabric which I hate (the fabric, not the down). If anyone knows where to buy one, tell me.

Thanks for looking, but no... :( The outside is heavy duck, like Carhart, and the inside is wool or some natural fabric, and they weigh like 10 lbs. Definetely not for backpacking. I love the heavy weight...

I should just go steal my Uncle's.

That is really cool, except porcupines (a problem up here) could stab you from underneath... And they should make them in double sizes... But otherwise, really cool!

Check out the pads made by OR. Super comfortable, warm, and don't take up much space.
Best of all, my 70 lb. dog can't even poke a hole in it.
Good luck.
Tim...now to get the dog to stop farting...

Try switching brand dog food, especially from one with a lot of fillers (corn, crap like that). I prefer to get ones that have meat as the first ingredient. Mind you, I got this one lamb formula and it made Salix have nasty-ass nuclear farts. They were so bad I would actually wake up from a deep sleep due to the horrible stench. And every time she stretched she couldn't help but poot. But I switched her to another lamb formula and the gas is gone. Kelly rejoices. So does the ozone layer.

Oops never mind I found it...Outdoor Research...those puppies are a tad expensive tho. Is it worth it? I'm hoping to find a double size pad for sleeping two, doesn't look like a lot of companies make those.

Just buy two singles and put velcro down one side of each. Voila, a double.

samurai_nerd
September 7th, 2006, 02:53 pm
I think that a double wouldn't work very well anyway. As soon as one of the two sleepers got up all the air would squeeze to the other side and you would be left on the ground. I saw this page at MEC:

http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_listing.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=25343743 02701679&bmUID=1157659517764

The MEC brand mats are cheaper but probably still decent for quality. At one time we bought the really cheap ones from Army and Navy and they worked fine. At the bottom of the MEC page there is a "coupler" to put two singles together, but its probably a $12 piece of velcro like Kellykins is talking about.
