Might as well start this project thread from the beginning. This was about 3 years ago that I bought it.

When i bought it:

Look how tall this purple beast was!

http://www3.telus.net/public/sugab/4Runner/4runner/images/Left%20Rear.jpg

First thing I did was get rid of the gay color:

http://www3.telus.net/public/sugab/4Runner/4runner/images/Busted%20Window.jpg

Then I chopped the top:

http://www3.telus.net/public/sugab/4Runner/4runner/09.jpg

Followed by an exo and more cutting:

http://www3.telus.net/public/sugab/4Runner/4runner/64.jpg

Since those pics Dana 60's have been added, and now its getting a bit more buggy-ized, I cut the rockers out, and moved everything up, my sliders are now 9" higher than they were in the above exo pic, I'll be plating in the "doors", and adding some bling seats and harnesses.

Well, i'll post pics tomorrow, there is no front end, everything from the firewall forward is gone, frame included. I want to lower the truck 4-5" and the frame had to go due to clearance problems.

Hey Belmont, they were F150 springs, you dont want them, non military wrap, dont flex that well, and they are kinked to crap.

Update pics, some gooder progress, front radius arm crap ditched in favor of a 3 link with panhard, seems to work and clear everything well. I did a quick weight guesstimate judging by the coil compression, knowing that the front coils are 240lb/in and the rears are 220 lb/in, the sprung weight is around 1860lbs empty. A lil better than before!

http://www.blackflag4x4.com/upload/Flextest1_005.jpg

Coils arent attached up top yet, but thats minor

http://www.blackflag4x4.com/upload/Flextest1_006.jpg

Pinion angle stays good throughout travel
http://www.blackflag4x4.com/upload/Flextest1_007.jpg

Rear springs might be a tad on the stiff side, but the truck is totally empty, no liquids/tools/misc gear.

Holy crap! Where'd the springs come from? At that weight I think you'll find the springs too stiff. Unless you're trying to control body roll also.

And to give you a real answer, I dont have the patience or time to build something from scratch. It is much easier to use the existing vehicle that works, has all required dimensions and work from that.

My truck was an evolution, it just kept changing and changing, and that for me is fun. If i sold a beat up 4 runner with dana 60's, i wouldnt get that much for it, and then i would have to rebuy everything new, and be at another loss. This build cost me maybe $1500.

Amen! I'm with you Poopy.
I'm in the same boat. Selling the existing and starting over is not an option. Evilution is the key. You already know what works and change the things that dont, or can work better.

The Evil 2.0 budget is well under 2 grand for me as well and that includes my new 2.0 twin cam motor I spent 1200 on. Try and build something for that:rolleyes:

rkjplt1
October 9th, 2006, 12:56 pm
In my experience, it's more expensive to build it through time. But your skill level of fabrication and driving also builds. Plus it's easier to build it slowly than having to spring for everything all at once.

I gotta say, for someone who likes to bash other peoples ghetto fab so much, you still managed to let a few farmer welds make it on your own rig!:D

I prefer constructive criticism to bashing.

And there isnt one pic close enough to see the quality of the weld anyways...maybe circle one in paint for me and I'll tell you the story behind it.

I'm just bugging ya, I know sometimes it happens and you just want it done. But the one on the left here looks like bird****, doesn't look structural so I can let that slide. :D The one on the right looks like it was welded a little on the cold side, doesn't mean it won't hold, just not as good as it could be.:p

Whoah, don't get your panties in a bunch, it was posted as a joke, hence the smilie. I'm pretty sure poopy took it the way it was intended.
Yes I know whether a weld will hold or not, I deal with it at work all day. I weld pressure vessels at work that are tested to 350psi, and are subject to 1200 ton loads day in and day out.

This is good, ;)

The one on the left is left over from plasma cutting off a piece of 2x2 tube, the one on the right is just holding the plate on, none of it is finish welded, just enough to hold it together so i could make it to Mainland cup......but I was still 2 days short...lol

Poopy, my buddy is wanting to convert his 81 leaf sprung dodge 1/2 ton to a triangulated 4-link in rear, and standard 4-link in the front, how difficult was that build and what kind of parts did you use.

Sorry I missed this, the build was easy-ish, I used the link calculators available on Pirate4x4.com to get me in the ball park, then overbuilt everything so it wouldnt break, and it seems to work! I used some Evolution Machining Heims, Poly bushings, some thick ass DOM for my lower links, some not so thick ass tube and pipe for my upper links. I recommend just look at what lots of other guys do to get you an idea on material thickness, and where to locate stuff. One of my goals this time around was to have an absolutely smooth bottom with nothing to hang up on.

Is that just standard Lexan? Or does it have a Marguard coating?

lexan expands and contracts like crazy so hopefullly u allow for room for that... dont put it bone tight in there or it might get all warped and nasty. unless its just gonna be used in the winter as u said "winter windshield"

I ran lexan last year with no wipers. It's not bad but I couldn't see half the time because I didn't want to scatch it by wiping it off.

Goggles with tear aways would work better than a lexan window that can't run windshield wipers.

I still disagree....went wheeling with the lexan....its nice, even in a blizzard. Rain-X would be good for pissy rainy weather.

not only did it keep the snow and rain out..it worked as a heat deflector shield and kept things toasty warm :)

I'll tell you what, I will do you 1 favor and haul it to the scrap yard for you, just leave it at the end of the driveway.:finger_1: BTW I know we've never met, but anyone who does work like that probably has a good sense of humor.

I guess I need to spend a few hundred more hours cutting my junk up before I can talk s h i t .
Nice buggy, how did the center of gravity feel with the 44's, and aside from mega clearance and looking really cool, what advantages did you notice with your set up rolling on the bigger meats?

Poopy
February 12th, 2007, 03:25 pm
No advantages other than the stupid huge width for stability on off cambers... I broke a rear axle with them, and sheared off all 8 studs on a front hub with them. And they didnt fit in the trail.

So now its a nice buggy? I dont get it....:cwm30:

aight, keep me posted....

Hey I have a sterling single axle with a MBE and a MBT....its got super gay startability...wtf did the factory do wrong? It almost stalls at any uphill stop with 13000lbs on the deck. Its supposed to have the OD tranny and 4.33's in the diff. But it feels lik its got 2.55's in the diff. :P

All the MBE's 904, 906 , and 4000 are considered medium duty engines, I don't think people that spec trucks out to sell really grasp that yet . Either way 13,000 isn't really heavy so if it has done that since new then you may indeed have the wrong gears for the application. Check the tag on the diff, the ratio will be stamped there. If it feels like it may be a low power problem rather than a gearing problem then get warranty to pay for a chassis dyno test to see if it's in spec.
I would get rid of an MBE when warranty runs out anyway , to fix big trucks = big bucks.
In the meantime, if it has air brakes, dynamite them on a steep hill start so you are quicker on the throttle. You can do that with a driveline brake to ,if you're only running juice brakes.
Good luck.
