View Full Version : Please Vote On Changes to Buy/Sell Forums

lars
May 2nd, 2006, 11:15 am
Due to the frequent bickering and flaming that occurs in the Buy/Sell forums, some users have suggested changing them so that people who create the thread are the only ones who can post to them.

For instance, if someone posts a FOR SALE ad, the only way you can request more information is to contact the email address left by the poster. Obviously, if the poster forgets to include his email address, he will get absolutely no replies (remember, only Silverback board supporters have Private Message access). To avoid the necessity of having to type in an email address, the poster could alter his user profile to allow his email address to be made public.

The upside to this change is that people from the peanut gallery can't add their often-times annoying commentary into the thread. In other words, the Buy/Sell forums would function exactly like classified ads in the newspaper or on Buy and Sell.

I'd like to get everyone's opinion on whether or not we should implement this change, so please fill-out the poll.

I dont think enough people are going to realize that there is a poll up :D

I ignore the flames/bickering/hijacked threads. It'd be nice if the "pics to me too" responses were scaled back and handled by email, but I'm not in favor of restricting this at the cost of preventing useful discussions that can take place in the threads.

I would rather see more effort put in by the mods to police the bickering done. Maybe add another mod or two to keep the workload managable?

brian468

I voted yes cause for some reason its easier to haggle with someone on a board then in private, probably because you can see if there isn`t alot of interest in an item or justs its price on the board and its a nice bargaining chip.

I say just ban the idiots, this is already a great site and getting rid of a few morons wouldn`t hurt any.

I'm a newb to this board, so far I've sold 3 items and bought 2. No bickering, no problems, it's working great for me.

I think something should be done too , when ever I visit this site , i always click the " view new posts" thingy , and 90% of the new posts are from the Buy&Sell , it seems that this board is used more for Buy&sell than it is for Off road in BC discussions .
By doing what you mentioned in the poll , it will make the board less cluttered with "can I have pics" posts .

I agree with jeeponrock. You can answer a question that a few people are woundering about by posting a response to the thread instead of sending 10 e-mails. Some time people forget some small detail that the is very important.

If people starting using free hosting sites for there pics this would not happen.

however, once the seller is notified of a question, its not all that hard to come back and edit.

It would also be nice if people would edit the first post as *SOLD* when it is picked up. nothin worse than screening through pages to find out its sold.....

better yet, delete the thread

If you 'log off', then the Buy/Sell sub-sections aren't available to you, and will be excluded from your 'search recent posts'.

....so log off and then click on 'view new posts'.

If there is an item that is misrepresented there can be a public rebuttle.

example: for sale, suzuki samurai sj 410 axels, will work in your '88 samurai $5

To the uneducated this would be a pretty good deal. It wouldn't take long for someone to come on here and explain it will not work for that model year and these are the reasons why.

Or the other classic, a buyer asks "hey, will those work in my '88" and the seller responds "sure, bolt right up" once again, it won't take long for a correction to be made.

That's one of the benefits of buying junk off here.

Make it so that you can not sell anything unless you have 100 posts.

Don't make it so I can not ask dam questions.

What is the gear ratio?
What color?
what price?

Man there is so much junk in the without even a dam price

look here
http://bb.bc4x4.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=91654

I don't really have time to look around much more but that took 1 min.

I agree with John better moderators or more rules

I think the door to price critique needs to be opened - officially.

Email contact info should be mandatory for buy/sell sections. Phone number optional. (This is the Internet, remember?)

Other people need to be able to ask questions and give pertinent info in the thread. No one knows everything about what fits what, so that helps deals go more smoothly. IME, in certain newsprint classifieds, people deliberately withhold info in order to expediate their sale. :violin

May 3rd, 2006, 10:43 pm
every other forum I use has a min 50 posts before you can sell
also If you do not live in bc why are you here selling
I do like the idea of being able to correct someone if they are listing the wrong info
and for the love of god put the size of the tire in,don't say "35's for sale" say "35x12.50r15 bfg mt's with 50% tread left"

This isn't in the poll but...how about allowing the original thread starter to be able to delete any messages posted to his thread?

That way, he could remove the idiot postings. True, this power could be used for evil as well, but generally speaking, it might be a good thing.

That sounds good. If you have something to sell why does every Tom Dick and Harry have to come in and tell you you are asking too much or you item is a worthless POS. Nothing worse than someone trying to sell his truck and some @$$hat coming in and saying "Hey, mine is better and the same price. Buy mine"

And as far as wading in to the debate about this site being a buy and sell forum....yes it is. And that is cool. I have bought and sold a ton of $h!t here. If you want to talk about trails, click the Trail talk forum, not new posts.

dawb

Lars, thats alright too...

the one thing that gets me the most tho (like i said already) is going through a bunch of pages to find out that its sold. I guess its wading through the useless "oh so and so, remember that time we took this truck up here and flipped it, man that was awesome. U still have that? what colour is it now? say hi to the kids." etc etc

So yeah, i guess if the original poster actually takes the time to edit the thread that would work.

Greg, im thinking that over 100 posts etc doesnt really work, coz i wouldnt have just got a sweet deal on my SYE and driveshaft if that were so.

Changing the buy/sell would weed out a lot of looky loos and picture collectors. serious inquiries only. IMO

How often do for sale/wanted ads actually get deleted?? How far back?

i agree. if the only people being allowed to post in the forum is the sellers, the letter ttt better become your new favorite image when lookin for somthing you want to buy. also as we all know some things just dont sell. now if we have a bunch of people trying to sell things that are just not worth buying, were gunna have 2 or 3 pages after no time of old stuff that people just keep ttt-ing. if a time-limit was made on how long your post could be up for before its deleted if noone buys your junk i think that could work, but as far as im concerned i like it the way it is

I'm guessing that very, very few people delete their ad threads. Every month or so, I do a mass delete of all buy/sell threads that haven't had any replies within the last 30 days.

I voted wrong! Please change my vote to a Yes.

We need to let people reply.

Here's an example:
Someone tries selling a used D44 axle in "good" condition. A member of the board goes to take a look and notices that the ring and pinion gears are worn badly and ready to break at any minute. This member needs to be able to warn other members that the item is not in good condition so that someone else doesn't get burnt. Same goes for potentially stolen items, or instances where the seller has ripped people off in the past and will probably do it again.

We are a community and we need to be able to take care/warn our fellow members.

I know you need to be a board supporter to post pics but why not allow the seller to post one or two pics of his or her merchandise so as to eliminate all the useless babbly crap that goes on in a thread. This eliminates all the "post pics, send me pics" yada yada.

I do like the idea of the thread starter being able to delete the nut head posts.

I like the useless replies, reading idiots dumb questions like "how much?" and then replying with a quote of the original post where the price was clearly stated is how I amuse myself during bouts of insomnia

Those other for sale ads too are great, the ones from people with a post count of one, who've hidden their email adresses, and don't give you any contact info in the ad, and never check the board again.

You know, I've bought a lot of stuff off this board, and tried to sell a lot of stuff, but never actually sold any of it, oddly enough I sold a few things that I didnt have for sale at the time through a reply of something like "hey would you happen to have a spare driveshaft to fit that you'd be willing to sell"

May 5th, 2006, 10:31 am
The crap that goes on here, is nothing compared to other free boards I'm on - where the useless crap and lowballing is at least three fold. On the flipside, the paysites I'm on are a bunch better.

Being able to delete other people's posts is a bad idea IMO cause otherwise useful info on the product or character of the seller could be deleted. If the thread gets too cluttered, just copy/paste a new thread (with updated info) and delete the old one - simple.

Funny thing is, I never see any threads getting closed.

I don't even bother watching those forums because:
a) I have no interest in buying/selling anything.
b) I don't have the time.

I only step in if somebody complains to me about a particular thread.

Also, since the information in the thread is generally useless after a month anyway, any troublesome threads get deleted, not closed.

The idea (don't let people respond in the threads) has been suggested to me more than a few times, so I thought I should put it to a poll.

Island4x4 has that policy in place right now, partly in order to reduce bandwidth costs.

Who here is interested in moderating the Buy/Sell forums? Big Bad Pete used to do a good job at it but he doesn't have the time anymore.

Mods get Private Messaging and attachment privileges.

Of course, if a bunch of people complain that you're not doing a good job, I'll bust you back down to a registered user. ;-)

I could handle 4x4, Misc., Freebie, Tires and Chevy sections, if you're seriously looking.

Everytime I log on, I check almost every thread in those 5 sections anyways - so as not to miss out on any deals.

No, I only mentioned the bandwidth thing to explain ONE of the reasons why Island4x4 has implemented the restrictions. Advertising + board member support is keeping the board & site running.

Ok, I'm enlisting Fliptuner and Raskal to help with the buy/sell moderation. Raskal has volunteered to deal with the Jeep buy/sell section. Dan Martz is already doing the Toyota section. Fliptuner can do the rest as best he can, plus the other two can also help out if they poke around in those areas.

Fliptuner, please send me an email with your real name so I can set you up as mod.

And thanks to Brian and Brent for also offering their services. I was tempted to sign you up, Brian, but you might be too mean.
