Had this ticking from my 4cyl for a while now. Kind of sounds like a diesel when idling. I'm 90% sure it's the timing chain and 100%sure it's not the bottom end.

Anyone else have this problem? Is it typically just a worn and stretched chain, or more to do with the tensioner?

Engine still runs fine, I'm just sick of the noise and finally have the time to fix it.

wow 2 from abby with thr 4cyl gas power diesel sounding jeeps LOL i had the same deal new timing chain installed but NOT INCLUDED in the "COMPLETE KIT" was the timing chain tensioner so u prob need a new tensioner and timing chain cover providing u have a new timing chain on already

Smurf - how much did the parts and labor cost?

Did it cure the engine noise? I've got a bit of a rattle too and am wondering where it's coming from....

I haven't yet changed the timing chain.

Did the new chain and tensioner fix your problem?
Was your tensioner worn out, or did you just change it since you already had it apart?
Why would I need a new cover?

when i did my timing chain i bought the kit from lordco it did NOT include the tensioner the result being
when the engine was at idle the chain would rub the timing chain cover (mine almost wore threw) i never did fix it i just kept tighting it up till i did a motor swap (same size one) every time i tightened the tensioner it would stay quiet for some time then gradually get back to being loud parts were pretty cheap i think about $80ish and some time i did it myself hopefully helps u out with your problem
