'94 Pathy sticks in 1st

My buddy has a 1994 Pathfinder and occasionally has trouble with the auto tranny.

It'll stick in first and won't shift up. From what I understand, he has to stop, restart the truck and then it'll work fine.

I checked his tranny fluid, looks nice and clean. Any other ideas?

The tranny is about to go. Fix it soon or he'll be buying a rebuilt tranny before summer. Nissan didn't have enough cooling to the autos. Install an external fluid cooler after the tranny is dealt with.
