my girlfriend is a surveyor/ACAD'er. have options on getting GPS of all types.

the Q: can a normal GPS unit be used to track your ripped off rig?

there was a platform availiable i saw in the states that cost 800 bucks and only the police could track it.

I did a search on this question but came up empty.

Guess you would need a constant power source, hidden location for the unit, some kind of hidden/low profile antenea, and always turned on????

Most importantly, you need a way to broadcast the GPS position information, and that's where off-the-shelf GPS units fall short. None of them are capable of long range broadcasting. You would need a specific anti-theft system that is designed to do this. I would guess that some kind of cellular communication system would be used, I don't know if any actually use direct-to-satellite communication.
