Here's what I want to do...

I want to turn my GPS on, drive around on old roads/trails, download that info. to my computer and printout a map of where I've been. In other words, an EXACT map of the route I took.

Is this possible with todays GPS's or do you still have to do the old "lines between waypoints".

I really want to be able to make a map of the places I hunt and fish that I can carry with me.

Thanks

Me.

with my GPS, I can log a map on the unit of exactly where I have traveled, just so long as you keep the unit in one location in your truck, facing forward. I havent downloaded it to my computer before, but I would assume that it could be easily be done.

What brand/model of GPS are you using?

Whoops, the Garmin E-Map, and yes, after trying it, I can print off a route map. I have topo maps of a ton of backroads up-loaded on this unit, it's uber handy.

You can easily do that with any modern GPS. I typically use 20 metre increments for mapping but I easily mapped in 5 metre segments. An external antenna really helps and I'm partial to real time navigation on my laptop.

Actually, you don't need it to be facing forward.

Hey Lars or anyone, I'm custom mounting one of those LCD panels into my rig for DVD etc etc (yes I'm a computer geek), my question is, are there any of these GPS units that have a video out of some kind to directly hook into something like this???

I've never seen one. Your best bet is to look at marine navigation systems.
