Quick question...are you going to wheel it or just for around town?

Hi. I own an Xterra, and I definately love it. I picked up a 2002 SE-SC about 2 months ago, and its been great. There arent any complaints about the truck except that I had to get my horn replaced cause I got some mud in it. I believe the Supercharged version (210hp) is definately worth it, but if you're weary on premium gas costs, then stick with an SE or XE.

I've only been able to go camping once in it, and it wasnt much of an offroad expedition. The stock tires are absolute garbage. I think they're BFG Rugged Trail TAs.

Well, if it's for camping and light wheeling, then the Xterra would do just fine. Mudding is probably just fine as well, with good tires. But if you're going to start to do rocks or anything like that, then you're looking at heavy modifications starting with a SAS and more. It's been done, but $$$: Xterra with SAS (http://www.xterraownersclub.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=001648).

And this is not an encouraging quote from an Xterra owner: Many of us have found cracks in the engine bay along the radiator crossmember, and in the wheel wells. Now we have more cracks to worry about.

I think Nissan needs to look into this.

And you can see some of the cracking that they're talking about here: Xterra cracks (http://www.xterraownersclub.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=000951).

So...take it for what it's worth. :beer

Yeah, there's something else too. A lot of older Xterra owners (2000-2001) are complaining about an exhaust manifold crack as well.

There's a huge thread on it there. I've only noticed 2000 and 2001 owners though, so correct me if I'm wrong.

Even if they've fixed the manifold problem for the newer models, you're still looking at $32+k for a new one. In the Buy & Sell, listings for 2000-2001 Xterras ranged from $18k to $25K, depending on model, options and mileage.

That's why I'm a former Nissan owner, my 2 cents.

But I got my 2002 SE-SC (43000km) a few months ago for $25,500 :D

Just talk the **** out of Richmond Nissan, and they'll give you a deal. Say stuff along the lines of "I want money off so I could get new tires." or something like that.

I know they're expensive, and I would rather have a Toyota, but I dunno, once I got mine, I kinda grew an attachment to it. and also they're hella a lot cheaper than a Toyota.

That's a great price. And I guess it all comes down to what you really want. Your Xterra will have pretty good creature comfort, have local dealership support, and is reliable transportation for around town and light-medium wheeling.

However, I picked up my 1988 Land Cruiser for $18k. It has a heavy duty chassis with factory live axles. It has a turbo diesel, PTO winch, and cable locking front and rear diffs, etc. It's not the most powerful truck on the road, but has lots of low-end torque for wheeling and can still comfortably cruise the freeways at 120 km/h...while getting close to 30 MPG. And while some people might think the right hand drive would be too hard to get used to, I actually prefer driving my Cruiser than my wife's car. Downside is that I wouldn't trust any dealership to ever work on my truck (most local shops have no clue about Toyota diesels)...my friends and I work on it ourselves, that way we know it's been done right. But, there's plenty of Cruiserheads around to lend their wisdom and parts are fairly easy to come by.

So, people do get attached to their vehicles, no matter what make. I know I was attached to my Pathfinder while I had it. But don't think that Toyotas are too expensive, as people are discovering these import Land Cruisers that have been the prefered 4WD in places like Australia, the Middle East and the world over. If you really like the Nissan thing, and are looking for a heavy duty truck, I occassionally see those funky Nissan Patrols for sale. They are rated about as highly as Land Cruisers in most cases. :beer :canadian

30MPG is amazing :D I get about 13-14 in my X, in spite of the 16/21 city/hwy ratings that the truck gets.

Before I got my Xterra, I really wanted a Tacoma. But before I got to the Toyota lot at Richmond, I looked at the Nissan lot. I saw my truck there, and I just kinda wanted it after. It was really weird. I'd still like a Tacoma though.

Mustang Connections in the interior had one a while ago that took a while to sell...I think the asking price was around $13,900 or something. It was was a nice truck. Their website is www.mustang.bc.ca. They don't have any listed right now, although they have a nice series 2 diesel Pathfinder for sale for less than $7k. But I'm sure that if you ask any of the importers locally that you're interested in a diesel Patrol they could get it for you easily enough. Cheers.

The diesel Nissan Patrol is rated as high, if not higher (very very tough tranny/t-case and great engine) then the LC. I've got a subscription to the Ozzy 4wd Monthy, and the Patrol is always up there...

That said, I am not giving up my BJ74 any time soon.

One would be funky. I think parts would be more of an issue with a Patrol here, as many items for the Jap Cruisers coming over can be gotten here (cross over of mechanicals for the drivetrain).

What are the mods to your Xterra? Hard to tell from the pic, but looks like IFS still on the front?

Car salespeople are all the same...research what is the best possible price for an Xterra and go to the dealer nearest you and don't walk out of there until you have the deal you are looking for. For what its worth the parts guys at New Pacific Nissan are great, and from my experience a few years ago, so is their service department.

Case in point: My old 1990 Pathfinder that I loved to hate so much went in for a routine tranny flush at New Pacific. The machine that they used to power flush my tranny had no water separator in the compressor, and being the middle of summer, there was a lot of moisture collecting that got dumped into my tranny with the new fluid. It was enough to turn my ATF milky pink, and my tranny packed it in as I was turning around to go back to the dealer for a re-flush.

New Pacific sent a tow truck for me and assured me that they would take care of me. They rented me an F150 for a couple of weeks while my transmission was being rebuilt. They rebuilt my transmission for me (value of thousands of $$), paid for my vehicle rental (another few hundred $$), all at no cost and no hassle to me because they realized it was their faulty equipment. It's this kind of integrity that leaves a lasting impression in a customer's mind.
