When is it legal (if ever) to drive without your doors on? In the summer I see all sorts of Jeeps and Broncos(66-77) driving the around the streets with their doors off. Is it legal for them to drive on the streets with their doors removed?

Confused?

Rather than starting another post, I'll ask this here too, Are half doors legal on vehicles that were never equipped with them, or never had them as an option?

Ex. I want to build some half doors for wheeling for my Toyota Pickup, will I get in trouble on the street with them?

If the vehicle was manufactured with doors, it still needs to have the doors installed.

I am not aware of any "normal" vehicle that was built without doors.

Answers to questions like this one can be found on our Modified Vehicles Page (http://www.island.net/~cihp/modify.html)

this was gone over a while back and as in jeeps i think its only technicly legal on the cj cuz they came with the option fer no doors or something and i think it was sorta illegal but wether u get pulled over or called on it depends on the cops judgement i think but in other words i dont think it was that big of a deal wether u drive with or with out
!wow he answered it while i was writing this!

FYI: I've driven 3 summers with no doors, I went through a roadblock once and the officer said "Cool Jeep" :redneck

I think officers realize sometimes that they have better things to do than ding guys for not driving with doors on..... if you want to air on the side of caution though, you can have minimal doors built out of tube or those soft doors from bestop installed that will satisfy the laws, then pop them in the back when you're on the trail.

It may also be that they are non-traffic enforcement and don't know that you require doors.

Doors on jeeps are a option from the dealer. My friend won a court case on that argument.

He would have to be able to show that the vehicle was produced without doors. If it was, they still have to be there.

You can do this through the option codes on the sticker on the back of the glovebox door.

i read the modified vehicles page. no mention about half doors....just this

Doors: If the vehicle was manufactured with doors, the doors must remain installed. Doors must be in good working order, and any hinge, latch or handle must not be broken, missing or inoperable.

so does this mean that if i have home made half doors, from old stock doors, and the hinges, latch and handle are intact and working they are legal??

The doors the vehicle came with must remain installed.

Why is it that delivery trucks, with the slide back driver door, can drive around with the doors hidden back into the pocket...is this legal?

...also if I take the doors that came with my truck and modified them into 1/2 doors, will this be questioned? They are the doors that came with the vehicle and they are still installed the same mannor as from OEM?

exactly what he said^^^about how u could modify the doors to as small as u want cuz from what i understand all the hinges and crap would still be in workin order

You are going to run into someone that will issue a VI for the doors. Check with your favorite inspection facility to see if they will give you a pass with the doors modified. If they will, I wouldn't sweat it too much, as you will be able to inform the officer of this. If you still get the VI you know you will pass.

If the facility says no, it will not pass, then you have a second opinion that concurs with my answer.

Roll the dice.If its hot out, take your doors off and enjoy.Thats exactly what I did in my 4runner all summer, and of course I wore my seat belt.If you get pulled over for it,dont be ignorant, just respect the man enforcing the law.If you dont dish out attitude, you may just get a warning.Cooperating has always worked for me.:violin

Happened to me, box 1 Vehicle inspection. The officer said he wouldn't have pulled me over if I had doors. I had to get it towed all the way to Maple Ridge from Deroche. Thats why I want to know if I can get away with half doors.

tons of jeeps run around with half doors on, i dont see anything in the regs about "modified" doors. i dont think you are goin to get a definite no or yes answer on this one, just cut the doors down but make sure that that they still offer signicant amounts of protection in case of a side impact.

thats just my opinion though

Older jeeps came with the half doors, they were not modified to that configuration. My jeep came with soft top and full removable soft doors from the factory. I have a hard top and doors now, but my jeep was not optioned that way.
Basically I'd say do what you want, take your chances, if you get a VI notice deal with it.:)

I checked out my jeep and it didnt come with doors, a roof, rear seat or passener seat. My understanding of the law is that if it comes with doors (like a tj or yj) the doors have to be there. If it didnt come with doors (optional before 1986) you dont need doors. I went to the rcmp office in kamloops to ask about it and brought a document that said my jeep didnt come with doors and the officer said "we can enforce any law we want". So i went to an inspection place that deals with only 4x4s and they said id win if i got a ticket.

This is a bad topic and pretty much comes down to the police officer you talk to...:(

You are right. If your vehicle was ordered and produced at the factory without doors, you didn't have them on today and were ticketed for it, you would win the dispute.

If your vehicle could be ordered without doors, but wasn't, you would lose.

What about tube doors like this? There would be mirrors mounted if I were on the street with these...

These doors never got a second look from the police in Moab...:D

They use a DOT rotary latch, much stronger than stock doors and are bolted to the factory hinges.

How high is up?

They aren't the doors the factory put there. If I saw you, I would stop you and deal with it.
