View Full Version : Cutting off rocker panels

My rocker pannels are rusted out so rather than waste time repairing them so that I can go smash them on something I am just going to cut the suckers off. Once I am done I will cover the hole with 1/4" steel (maybe 1/8" not sure) so that it is covered and I will have something solid to bounce off rocks.
I will be cutting off everything below the blue line

Including the legs? Sorry Paul, had to be the first to make that comment http://www.bc4x4.com/ubb/smilies/cwm1.gif
And I still think you should remove everthing ABOVE the blue line. http://www.bc4x4.com/ubb/smilies/cwm1.gif http://www.bc4x4.com/ubb/smilies/cwm1.gif http://www.bc4x4.com/ubb/smilies/cwm1.gif http://www.bc4x4.com/ubb/smilies/cwm1.gif http://www.bc4x4.com/ubb/smilies/cwm1.gif http://www.bc4x4.com/ubb/smilies/cwm1.gif http://www.bc4x4.com/ubb/smilies/cwm1.gif http://www.bc4x4.com/ubb/smilies/cwm1.gif http://www.bc4x4.com/ubb/smilies/cwm1.gif http://www.bc4x4.com/ubb/smilies/cwm1.gif http://www.bc4x4.com/ubb/smilies/cwm1.gif http://www.bc4x4.com/ubb/smilies/cwm1.gif

I don't lurk anywhere. I jump right in with both feet (sometimes both feet in mouth http://www.bc4x4.com/ubb/wink.gif ) http://www.bc4x4.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.bc4x4.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.bc4x4.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

My opinion is dont cut them off, just weld on some heavy angle iron. It'll save a lot of work. Get some big angle, go right to the bottom of the door. I suppose an L shaped piece would be better for that, but you get the picture, I think you should avoid removing strenth, just add some instead.

I think that 1/4" plate bolted and welded with all the bracing that would be required is going to be much stronger than the factory sheet metal. Besides, you could take a plastic straw and push it through the sheetmetal in some places. No point replacing that because it will only end up being dented later anyway.
