wow, i sound like i know what i'm talking about... :)

How much do manual hubs cost? what model of newer runners came with manual hubs?

These things are very prone to rust, I have seen so many rotten ones lately its amazing, not like you can bolt on a new rear quarter. I have been following prices closely on these for years and downward trend is finally happening. Saw one advertised at a dealer for $4500. Good time to buy, plenty on the market

ya, i saw that one advertised for 4500$, body was rusted out really bad, and it was a 4-cyl. i've got a 91, and the trim is different on them than the 90's, its more sealled to the body, and they tend to last longer when it comes to showing rust. the head gasket recal was for only a select group of toys, i'm guessing on engines made at the same time, but if you take the vin number to a dealer, they'll tell you if their is anything wrong that they recalled on your truck. watch out for the rear windows, they always stop working for some reason, but a new motor is only about 125$ at lordco i heard, and even sometimes its just the switch thats faulty.

Watch out for the timing chain, they are an expensive repair on those. I bought a 92 last year for 4500 and had to sink over 1000 for a timing chain. Oh and the dude that said stuff about the chrome trim is right. and the mudflaps, or should I say mud collectors.

forget the 4 cylinder in the second gen 4Runner. Too little, too late. Get the V6 and put a decent exhaust on it.

The HG recall started sometime in 1990 and lasted until 1995 I believe and was for the 3VZE motor only. As someone said, check the VIN with a dealer to see if it was done. You may get lucky and find one that Toyota is still willing to repair/replace.

In 1992 they made some changes including sequential fuel injection for the V6 motor (better fuel economy) and a slightly different grill/headlight and logo.

Manual hubs will go for about $50 a pop from a junkyard or about $450 each from the dealer. They're pretty easy to rebuild and make like new. Make sure you buy the IFS ones and not the Solid Axle ones as the spline count is different.

rear tire carrier only came on 1990 and 1991s.

Good luck,

I disagree, not prone to rust, just prone to stupid punks buying them and not taking care of them... If your gonna get one, get a 93 or newer, sequential fuel injection, better fuel economy. I would get a V6, better motor, good fuel efficiancy, as your not floring it all the time. 22re is a good motor, but its a real dog in these trucks. Head gaskets were bad until 91 or 92, Toyota fixed the problem after that. What ever you do, dont get the "power thievin" automatic

Cheers

I just bought a 91 runner with a 22re about a month ago. It is a little underpowered going up hills, but you get used to it. As for the hubs, mine had ADD when I bought it but I swapped in the manual ones last weekend. The swap took me about half an hour and I got the hubs off of Gumbom on this board for $40. HERE (http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/add/) is a link on how to do the swap.:beer
