I've been asked to post the following:
After several meetings with the City of Coquitlam, the ERKP is getting close to becoming a reality, but a small number of issues still remain. The main issue being addressed at this time, is the number of keys to be initially released. While a large number of people (well over 100) have shown interest in acquiring keys, an even greater issue is funding for this project. To acquire funds for the purchase of locks, keys, stickers, and signage ? and because only a limited number of keys will be available, those wishing to be first in line to attain keys, will be allowed to pre-purchase their keys and stickers by cheque. Since the ERKP has not yet reached final approval from the City, these cheques will not be cashed until such time has passed, and a key is available for the cheque issuer, within 14 days.
I will be pushing the City to approve the initial sale of 48 keys and stickers, then 4 every month afterwards. The costs for the keys and stickers will be: $30 for an L3; and $20 for L2 and L1. L3?s will be given priority. Each sticker will be dated for 2 years, after which each sticker vehicle will have to be spot checked for fluid leaks bi-annually. All funding information is available on the ERKP web site (hosted temporarily at http://members.shaw.ca/rswieczyk/ - best viewed on high speed internet).
The web site, and it?s information is still in final development, please also post any comments to erkpxo@yahoo.com, as well as any comments regarding the ERKP, it?s process, or content ? and support is always welcome for this project. Before making comments on the label, please keep in mind, this program will be put forth to other municipalities as well, if this one succeeds.
Thank you,
Rafael.

one question (i've already filled in my application and i'm writing the cheque now..it's one of my favorite trails - 5 mins from home!)
do i HAVE to be a member of a 4WD club? i'll join 4WDABC just so i can get my sticker..(besides the other benefits..:D)

So, while Raf was putting a LOT of time and effort into starting the key program and he was so close to going live...some ******* just cut down the friggin' gate!!
He's not sure if that has effectively killed negotations with the city but I'll keep you posted.
I am so pissed-off right now.
If you know ANYONE who is cutting locks or gates, you are part of the problem if you don't report them.

well guys sure as @#$% the gate is down.it was cut with a torch, and wouldnt you know it there were 2 trucks up there.2 kids and one older guy. the kids were stuck on the first obstacle and the older guy was sittin in his truck smoking a joint. when we walked up the kids ran thinking we were cops ontill the older guy said we were ok.the older guy says to us isnt this great and we replied no and told him why,I guess he figured shortly after that we werent cool and left but not before we got a plate number.my firts instinct was to leave the kids up there and phone the cops but they just got ditched by the guy who probablly convinced them to go up,so we gave them a hand cuz the didnt have a clue what to do and we have that plate number as well.

the best part about eagle is that the first obstacle traps almost any stock truck on all those stumps and slippery rocks and mud.
seen many a ranger and s10 get stuck there!
the best was the ranger with the wooden c-clips so he could back down - now HIS mullet was PROUD..

That would be great if it was the city, but now that everyone knows the gate is gone I wonder how many people have gone for a quick ride up there. Well I hope they realize the city could also come by and put a gate back up anytime and then they would be stuck up there, try and explain that to the cops.:D

I started a new job last week, so I have not had much time to do anything during the week. I even have to go into work tomorrow (Sat), as we are that busy.
Once I get settled in, I will have more time to get back into the swing of things. The next few weeks, I will be just working.
Most of my attention lately has been into the Blue Mt and TFL 26 stuff that has been going on (if you have been following the 4WDABC notifications).

Wes & Raf, keep up the good work... obviously these are tough times form all points of view and I'm sure I speak for all, in thanking you guys for your collective perseverance to the tasks at hand.
I'm sure you guys are well versed in civil politics, so I'm sure this isn't news to you, but somehow I feel that all is not lost in this case... I could be 100% wrong on this, but if this was a "deal breaker" then I'm sure we would have heard from the City by now... Obviously I would try to focus on why the ERKP should proceed, and hopefully form that you can find some common ground with the City from which to negotiate something mutual for all parties concerned...

I would say. just send in an application. The first set is probably all spoken for, but they are going to be realeasing more each month, so they are first come first serve. I have not heard yet if the program is still going orward since the gate was vandalized last time(torn down), but as far as I know none of your cheques will be cashed unless the program actually starts and you are aproved to get a key.

the part that really sucks about this kinda stuff is when it cause's good people, that were fighting to keep areas open for the yahoo's that did this, to quit the sport. yes thats right, recently I found out that somebody I know that was actively working working on keeping land open and working on the key program has decided to quit the sport of 4wheeling because of the morons that have no respect for what other people are trying to or what they are doing by vandalizing gates, public, and private lands

Right now it will noly apply to Eagle Ridge. This is the first program if this sort(to my knowledge) to be proposed and schedualed to start. If it works, we hope to be able to have similar programs for other areas that have been shut down or are being threatened to be shut down.

Go to the Mission forestry office (Dewdney trunk and Stave lake st), and you can "buy" a key to those locked gates. A lot of those gates restrict access to 2wd roads that end in 2 minutes, if your there, grab one of there FSR maps as well.

Most gates have keys available for them. They cost you $40 to get a key for 2-3 months, and when you return the key, you get $30 back. Many of the gates even have signs posted next to them with a phone number you can call to find out where you have to go to get a key. Usually it is the local Forrestry office.
The gates are there to protect loggin equipment from vandalism, and to stop the dumping and burning stollen cars. The fee is not intended to make them money, just help mantain the gates.

There is no point in buying FSR maps for anywhere except Mission (or outside the GVRD). Backroad mapbooks are good, but the Eagle key program is municipal.
If you dont own "Mussio's Backroad Mapbook SW B.C" you should get it. (Chapters $17)

No the Eagle Ridge key program is not like the others. The gate up Eagle ridge is not a forrestry gate(It's a city gate), so not anyone can get a key for it. With forrestry gates, all you have to do is go to the local forrestry office, and buy a key for gates that have them available. With the Eagle Ridge program, your truck will have to pass all the requirements listed in the program, and there will be restrictions on the access allowed.
With a little luck, we will be able to apply similar key programs to other gates and get trails opened to us again that have been previously closed(Blue Mtn, hut Lakes,....) once this one has started and proven to work.

Hello! I just found this site today and wanted to just introduce myself. After a number of years of doing the mini-van family thing, I just got myself into a '94 F350 quad cab 4x4 and want to go up Eagle.
I used to cruise Eagle almost daily in a little sh*t box Nissan, until I destroyed it and ended up in a series of crappy cars and vans!

I think it's bull-sh**! Honestly, I can see why *SOME* people cut down gates! The wizard who is in 'charge' of this area is not the sharpest knife in the drawer in my opinion! I drive up about every two weeks to see if there has been any trail activity, but see garbage and fire pits every time on this side of the gate. The problem there is NOT 4x4'ers. It's fricken local ya-hoo's partying. Why we (the people who have been 4x4ing there since highschool 20 years ago) can not use this land because of OTHERS NOT related to 4x4ing is beond me! I've gone top to bottom in 2wd, in low range before, in my stock CJ-7, with open diffs. However, there are some more difficult paths along the main road up, which allow for some more challenging navigating.
On the other hand, some people have managed to roll themselves, and a fair amount of eurosion has made for some more difficult terrain to be encountered since I ran it last, so the challenging routes will definately require some 4wd, and a little bit of technique.
If it ever opens up, it's definately a half day's worth of adventure and fun.

Yes, it is open and we are allowed to go up. The city has decided to leave the gate open during non-fire season, but will close it during fire season (summer). This is what is hapening this winter at least. Who knows what will hapen next year. It all depends on how much garbage gets dumped by irresponsible people.

Yes, it is open and we are allowed to go up. The city has decided to leave the gate open during non-fire season, but will close it during fire season (summer). This is what is hapening this winter at least. Who knows what will hapen next year. It all depends on how much garbage gets dumped by irresponsible people.
Potential cleanup in the works before next fire season? This year's Sumas & Stave? Might help sway the politicians by showing responsibility.

we have has a meeting with the town councel sugesting just that. The mayer thanked us for our past eagle ridge cleenup and then said that he still wouldnt open the gate.He explained that the land is the provincial governments responsabilaty, however if we were to help them have the land turned into a city park then he would let us in(yeah right).after the meeting we had with town council my impression is that the city is in a pissing match with forestry over the land and that the gate is the citys little f#@k you to the provincial government.

Not entirely. Now we don't have the hasstle of running the program and we still get access to Eagle Ridge.
the city will only be closing it when it is high fire danger. That's pretty reasonable to me.

Ya but the summer is the best time to go. You can go top less wheel untill 9 at night. But I'll take what I can get.

Yeah it would be nice to have access all summer, and most of us are responsible enough to realize the fire risks, and minimize them when wheeling, but there is the stupid factor out there that don't seem to care. At least being closed during high fire season will help ensure it is there for our future.

There have been changes in the city. New people doing new jobs. Communication between departments is not that great at the moment.
Lots of BS. The Coquitlam Crawlers are sorting though it.

we have been in touch with the city as well as forestry, what we have learned is that there is a new fire cheif and he wants the gate to be closed for good. We will continue to talk to the city as well as appear before town council again.the city does have veary good reasons for puting a gate ie. vandalisim and dumping.from what I understand the last key progra was dropped de to the fact that it was labour intensive and complicated so one of the things we may look at doing is a reworked key program. We will keep you all up to date in regards to the gate as well as our proposed clean up

I thought the govt closes the gates approaching fire season... sounds a bit early?

The Eagle Ridge key program died on the vine. IIRC the city turned down the proposal.

Lars, Can you remove the sticky from this post? Since the key program is over, and teh city refuses to listen to us any more, there is really no point in keeping this here.
