ya he's thinkin bout my 231 and we're not sure if it will work in a xj it came out of a 95 grand limited.if you know 100% ya or na i'm interested in knowing if it will for any other potential buyers. thanks

The transfer case bolt patterns are the same, but the input/output shafts may be different. What transmissions are you guys dealing with? Mike, you should know to call me for Jeep trivia! :beer_cheers:

Will the 242 fit onto an AX-15?

There's a couple of things that you need to look out for such as the speedometer input was mechanical cable before 92 and electronic afterwards. Also the 242 came with 21 and 23 spline input splines with short and long versions, the ax15 was 23 spline. The ax15 before 94 accepted the short input shaft and after 94 needed the long transfer case input shaft.:beer

So which year AX-15 would work with a 91' NP242? And how do you know if your NP242 has a long or short shaft? or if it has a 21 or 23 spline?

The input shaft will stick out of the transfer case 1" past the bolt flange if it's a short shaft or 2" if it's the long shaft. Just count the splines on the input shaft to determine what spline count it has. What year AX15 are you using?

it is a 23 spline,but i'll have to check on the input shaft length on monday,it's at work.

If it was mounted behind an:

AX-15 (pre -95) = Short input
AX-15 (post +94) = Long input
AW-4 (post +90)= Medium input

This is all assuming a 23 spline 242.

Now if this has an electric speedo and was mounted behind an AW-4, I might be interested.

I've seen both the xj's there on 33rd. Confused the sh*t outta me when what was once white, was now green!
