Personally, I think the Coastal Cruisers should have a support rig just like this one. I'm sure the club President would love to purchase it, finish the build and donate it to the club. Jeff, should you tell him of should I?

Sorry, kind of selfish of me. I forgot to say that the truck is a neat looking project. Is it a project just to have? What was your original intended purpose for the truck? Was just curious is all.
Maybe things will change again and you'll be able to keep it. Good luck.

Wow, that's going to be a great truck once it's finished. If I'd known about it a year ago, I might have jumped at it, instead of building my turbo-diesel 404.
From looking at the images, I have a few questions:
1. Is the truck left-hand drive?
2. Was the Hino originally a 2-wheel drive?
3. Did you install the front axle spring-over-axle, then cut-and-shut (at an angle) the rear of the frame, so that the frame would be horizontal, and not be higher at the front?
4. How did you hook up the steering linkage?
5. Are the brakes hydo-boost or hydrovac?
6. Are the tires legal on the highway?
7. Is the 3.8 engine powerful enough to turn those tires at highway speeds?
I'd better stop looking at your truck, because the longer I look, the more questions I'll have.

great question. the intend is simple. you can use it like a regular pick up truck. its the same size as a full size domestic with a bit better pay load. you can wheel, camp, explore or just use it as daily driver. that was the intend. also makes a good recovery or support vehicle.
oh wow ... that thing is sweet. Love the detail work you had put in before calling it quits ... the wheels, the POR15 job, nice shiny hardware everywhere ... really hope you get a good deal for it :)
thanks. i never intended to sell otherwise whould not have spend so much time on the details.

the truck orginaly started out as a regular hino FB 3 ton 2 wheel drive. i pruchased it as an unfinished project from another member on the board and have spend the last two years working on it.
the motor is surprisingly nice. i shouldnt say this but it was spinning the wheels on dry ground really nice yesterday. i think its a perfect combo for economy and performance. and yes the tires are radial speed rated tires. they come on millitay 5 ton trucks.

no. the tandem set up has enough play in it to give even at full turn.

Bright red, has a Camaro clip, 350 / 700r4 with all the work, etc, short box with teak floor. I smacked up the front fender and grill so I pulled it to bits intending to rework the grill which I'm not happy with, go injection, air con, power this and that and maybe chop the cab a bit. Ended up working on 4x4 projects since and haven't come back to it. Some photos at http://bit-rot.net/gmc/

i dont have a class 3. technically you require a class 3 since it has 3 axles but it does not have air brake so not any diffrent to drive than regular vehicle.

March 12th, 2009, 10:29 pm
Technically you do need a class 3 license to operate this vehicle. To get it you need to get your learners, then pass the ICBC road test. You just need to provide a vehicle for it, which if you bought that 6x6, it would fit the bill. Also since it doesnt have airbrakes you dont need an airbrake certificate. But you still do need the class 3, the airbrake endorsement is a seperate thing altogether.
very cool truck, if I had the money I would not hesitate. That is just not going to happen for me anytime soon.

Is the price USD? How much more would it take to get it on the road? What sort of mileage do you expect to get on it MPG? This truck looks like it would be a great platform for work truck/wheeler/camper/expedition!:cwm30: Does this truck have an intercooler? What is the power output?

the price is in canadian dollars. the truck was ment to be used for expedition trips. the power plant is 3.8 litre turbo none intercooled rated at 140 horsepower. you can up it to 210 with addition of intercooler (factory option) so the milage should be very good. a skilled technician should be able to finish it in no time.

sorry i was being an ass. lol
but no. 10 grand is a very good deal for the hardware and parts invloved so the trade has to be a very good deal as well. one can not expect full retail price versus a good deal.
so what is a killer price for a iltis with trailer?
Tmax
July 27th, 2009, 11:26 pm
something like a landrover defender or g wagon would be cool. hell i'll even consider a landrover 101. a pinzaguer would also be nice.
rezdiver
July 27th, 2009, 11:33 pm
as a general 4-5k for iltis and trailer with no cancer just needing prep and paint with milage under 50k is starting to be fair market.
This is not for my truck,
they used to be worth 1-3k for a good truck when they first came out but a bunch of wankers started to jack up the prices and sell these thing by the dozen a while ago which has brought the retail to 7-10k just for the truck and a crazy 1200-1500 for the dinky trailers, which is rediculous, and they say that they have rebuilt them which usually means they painted it with tremclad and covered the rust with bondo and steel checker plate and sell them to some poor unsuspecting soul. they are so simple to restore, i dont know why they dont do them properly.
I am not sure what a killer deal would be it all depends on what its worth to the buyer. a deal for me would be a truck trailer and a couple of grand worth of parts for under 5k.

the motor is W04CTI. the bellhousing patter is one of the standard sea or something liek that so it bolts up to many patterns. i susspect the bellhousing will fit many standard trany's. i think right now it has a saganaw transmission with the super low 7.5:1 first gear. i just found this. kinda interesting.

Was it Rob the the investment dude from Canmore who finally got it? I met him this past winter on a business lunch. I was invited to hang along as I was the resident 4x4 and expedition vehicle dude. SO I told him all about your truck and showed it to him on here.
Anyway ...all mog obsessed and expedition camper obsessed he had to look at my Swiss 404 before I sold it, and had a lunch to discuss all the possibilities of all sorts of stuff. Told him about your truck and how it was totally awesome and i'd had wanted to trade the mog for it and keep it for myself. In the end... I would not have been able to finish it the way he wants to. Hope it was him who got it...Money is no object it will be done 100% and 100% correctly..you'll see it out there for sure.
Guess he finally wised up and grabbed it...damn it where's my cut :)

That's funny! We bought the TJ with the fuel savings from changing the Burb from a DD to a weekend only rig, only to find out the the 4.0 Liter gets the same sh!tty gas mileage, and now it's costing me more cash with lift, tires, armor etc. etc. etc!

REALLY? Mine doesn't.. I mean it's no sprint but it's no suburban that's for SURE

if you want economy, you should look into industrial diesels. sorta something like a 6x6 hino.

I'm not totally serious. My point was that it's not saving me any money as I'm now slowly building it so I can still wheel something while the Burb goes under the knife (torch).

What the Hell! Is this a bidding war to see who's place I can use to do the SAS?
Hmmm, Sass does have a roof on his shop and might be in need of some friendship as he seams to be loosing some lately. . . . LOL!
I still need to build the axles and collect a few more parts before we can plan any kind of date.
Sass, did you get the cab yet?

I'd spring for the full hour if I was you, there's so much to see on that rig that you'll never fit it all in in half an hour.
