I know a lot of people on here get mad because people chop down trees for firewood or just because they're in the way, but what about chopping down some of the now very common dead pine beetle trees? are they any value to forestry anymore? do they still harvest them for pulp or something? i guess they could take out a healthy tree when they fall..

Its gonna be kinda scarey in the next few years as these now dead standing trees will become a very real fire hazard !

I use standing dead as firewood all the time. Can't see the problem with cutting down a dead tree. I don't see forest companies racing to fall Pine Beetle kill trees.

I always cut down dead standing trees. The wood is drier, one less tree to block your road also. Dead fall begins to rot and is wet wood and just junk. I burn two - three dead trees a week when hunting.

I take what's closest and driest be it dead fall or standing dead depending on how far I have to winch the log or pack the bucked pieces, but I see no problems at all harvesting unused dead wood.

they are all just fire hazards anyways. better a contolled burn than a wildfire.

Crawl around a lumber yard sometime. The stuff that's not blue is exported, leaving us to use the bug-kill ourselves.
Anybody else notice that #2 lumber has gone way down in quality over the last few years ?
FYI, if the tree is dead standing and looks like it died naturally (slowly), check out the stump right at ground level for resin-rich wood. Pieces of it make great firestarter because as the tree dies the resin 'falls'. Pines are best, cedar's good too. Shave it into dust with the edge of a knife - it lights like gas.
Or you can go to crappy tire and just buy it...lol

Yes, I have.
About standing dead, take your time and be carefull when you fall it. Fall it the way it leans or forget it. Wedging over snags isn't smart, better to domino them, which is only for pro fallers. When it starts to fall, move away on one of the two escape paths you prepared beforehand.
Pine isn't very good firewood, sucks to split, for one thing, there is better.

just get a dead and down permit from forest services for a small fee and you have no worries about taking wood, otherwise they can fine you for removing dead wood.
as for felling trees do not do the domino effect it is a death trap for most people and that includes us the profesional fellers that work in the industry!

Last summer we took down a shed at my parents that had been built about 30 years ago. In the roof there were 2x6s that were stamped SPF #3 that now would be graded as at least #1 so yes, all the grades are nowhere near where they used to be.

Like I said, dominoing a snag is for professional fallers, you are allowed to push one tree with another tree. Just one tree, with another, to overcome a falling difficulty. I have cut down bad snags, if they are that sketchy the wood is punky anyways.
Dead pine-the tree loses itegrity the closer you get to the top, if you are pounding away on the wedges, lookup, lots. Lookup anyways. Tree falling is a real skill, even the best get it once in a while.
4lo, no need for insults, maybe he thought I was condoning domino falling, I should have been more clear.
