I'm looking for some ideas or commercially available 12v/battery powered bug zappers. Anyone heard of anything...short of plugging in a home model into an inverter.
My kids literaly got eaten alive this past weekend camping at Harrison, luckily they are very young and regen body parts quickly. I am loathe to hang anything in the tent that burns, such as citronella candles or mozzy coils while they are sleeping, but I think some kind of electrified bug zapper would be a good idea to kill the bloody suckers that accumulate inside the tent (the mosquitoes that is).

I don't think there is any way to beat the bugs at Harrison this time of year. I was up there this time last year with my family. We had a mosquito tent, an electric bug zapper and 3 different types of mosquito spray and. The kids were still covered with bites everywhere and they were scared of camping for the rest of last summer, no joke. We even wore long sleve shirts most of the time but the little buggers can get you through those too. The worst bites were when they went to the washroom.

I've thought of trying one of these: http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444330 2199&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1408474396675969&bmUID=1216869497395

Got an email about this. Who knows, cheap and non toxic to try......

Mosquito Spray...Worth a try
I was at a deck party awhile back, and the bugs were having a ball biting everyone. A man at the partysprayed the lawn and deck floor with Listerine, and the little demons disappeared. The next year I filled a 4-ounce spray bottle and used it around my seat whenever I saw mosquitoes. And voila! That worked as well.. It worked at a picnic where we sprayed the area around the food table, the children's swingarea, and the standing water nearby. During the summer, I don't leave home without it.....Pass it on.

OUR FRIEND'S COMMENTS: I tried this on my deck and around all of my doors. It works - in fact, it killed them instantly. I bought my bottle from Target and itcost me $1.89. It really doesn't take much, and it is a big bottle, too; so it is not as expensive to use as the can of Bug-spray you buy that doesn't last 30 minutes. So, try this, please. It will last a couple of days. Don't spray directly on a wood door (like your front door), but spray around the frame. Spray around the windowframes, and even inside the dog house.

Now these are Good Mosquitos!!!

Moved to the Camping forum.

(My friend swears by incense burners. Tried 'em out on Galiano last weekend. Seemed to work, but the mosquitoes were already few and far between, and nothing like what you'd see at Whipsaw.)

Did the Listerine work?

Snopes.com says it won't: http://www.snopes.com/oldwives/dishsoap.asp

Now this, on the other hand, while it won't work automatically, will give one the satisfaction of watching the little blood-suckers make a pretty bright spark and a sharp "ZAP!" sound when you swat 'em with it...

Read all about them here: http://www.electricflyswatter.net/?gclid=CK2Wu47QsJcCFQkiagodQFfYiQ

I pick a bunch up every time I go back to Taiwan for a visit, though now I've seen them over here. Of course, in Taiwan they go for a couple/three bucks. AND they plug into the wall (110V) to recharge rather than the old ones using two AA batteries.

As for the sprays, go with DEET, folks. Don't waste your time with the others. And the DEET doesn't need to be full-force to work. I think mine is at or under 10% DEET. I hardly ever get bitten.

Those tennis racket zappers do work good! I did order a 12volt bug zapper, but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I'll post a review come bug season.

You need to post it before bug season so we know whether to buy it or not! Tough to do without bugs to test it out on I suppose.... ;)

I rocked a 120v bug zapper on a 400w inverter last year.. it ran the zapper all night from a red top optima with no issues.
