I was just talking to KMS car parts about this. They sell a GM Crate motor for about $2500 (heads and block) for a 290HP, model #12499529 and $3600 for a 330HP #12486041 version.

The sweet thing about the Crate motor is that it is BRAND NEW, and not rebuilt. Also, they come with a 2 year warranty or something like that. I know quite a few guys who have dumped over 2 grand into just the heads only to have the bottom end go out 2 months later.

If you are going to do a full rebuild with new pistons, it should be fine, but think about saving a bit longer for a crate.

Google for the part numbers I posted and the first hits will be the engines I am talking about. You can find them quite a bit cheaper from the states. Just gotta finger out how to get it across the border without getting raped by UPS or some such nonsense. Maybe order it through a US GM dealer?
