I have an 84 Toyota bj 60. Just did a frame swap, installed lockers and added a 2 inch body lift to existing 3 inch suspension lift.

T case was fine before, had to shim with new frame. 2mm maybe at most.

T case seemed ok at 1st but sometimes in 4h/4l the gear ratio changes but front wheel's do not turn, lockers engaged or not [yes the hubs are locked]. Sometimes if I move the shifter I feel it engage and low and behold I can get up the hill but... there is a thump, thump thump from the t case and a few other sounds. Does not sound pretty. It may be my imagination but I think there is more rolling resistance.
I know the gears can bind up but getting this thing out of 4h/4l is a bitch Also. Problems getting worse, testing tonight and could not get engaged and the one time I did it just did not feel or sound right. T case rebuilt about 3 years ago.

I have a inkling it has something to do with the shifter/body lift. Seemed a bit of a chour to get that shifter lined up with hole. man I got no idea.

Murphy's law, trying to get sorted for whipsaw.

While I am here, is it common for arb air lockers to stay engaged for a bit after "turning them off" Even if I back up, in 2h they stay engaged for a bit maybe a minute or so. [F and R]

Any and all comment appreciated, frustrated in Halfmoon Bay, Cheers, Bob:cwm10::anyone::confused::angry

Try the Toyota section here. Or, you likely get a quicker response for your issues on IH8MUD. The local Cruiser Heads hang out in the International Club House. You can also post in the 60s section or the diesel section for issues specific to a Canadian market BJ60.

The locker can stay engaged for a 3-5 seconds after you turn them off, but that is usually because it is still loaded. Let off the throttle for a second and it will disengage.

Sounds like you might have something wrong with the locker itself? Call their tech line @ 1-888-427-2872.

sounds to me like your shifter might not be fully engaging probably because of the body lift, it could be the rubber boot stopping it from traveling far enough?
does the floor need to be trimmed or the shifter extended?

Thats kinda what made sense to me. Put her up on jack stands today and of course everything worked fine with out a load.

I checked the shifter, it was up against inner boot tight so trimed it a bit. Hope to test sun. keep my fingers crossed it's one of those simple things.

Thank,s:soso

Well, my custom cutting seemed to solve the problem. Worked fine a my secret testing ground. I took a chunk of mettle out so shifter could engage fully. We` did that previously but... obviously not enough

Ready to roll, Whipsaw here we come.

That's for the feedback gang

Tested properly to night and still not correct Got it figured though, went for a little ride with the kids under the power line and walking along side listening noted the DT bind up. Reminded me of a front locker when turning. It suddenly came to me, we made 2 good diff's from 4 with the frame swap. Mine's an 84 and the other was a 82 if I recall correctly. What if they had diff gear ratio's. Came home, checked the spare pair of R&P and lo and behold one ring had 36 teeth the other 37. Glad I got that figured. Now I have to get them swapped around before Whipsaw. Ughhh.:cwm10::cwm10:
