View Full Version : Voltage Reducer

Well, it is time to go out and buy a voltage reducer. My truck is 24V. Now if it was just for a CD player and other electrics, I wouldn't worry. However, from what I have learned, some voltage reducers can cause problems for HAM radios. Is this true? If so, which voltage reducer can people recommend. I am thinking one which can handle a constant 20 amps will be enough.

I have the 20amp Solar converter Greg sells, but haven't installed it (or a ham radio) in my 74 yet. It's nice as it's also a load balancer - it'll keep your 24V batteries charged equally.
My plan is to use it to charge a 3rd 12V deep cycle battery, then run all my 12V accessories (and there will be quite a few...) off the 3rd battery. Might be a way to go for you too.
You could ask Greg about the solar + ham radio question. He's in touch with the guys that make it and could likely get a proper answer for you.

Good idea Norm. I'll drop a line to Greg. BTW, what is G&S selling them for now?

I bought mine back in like October, I don't recall exactly what I paid. I THINK it was around $220, but don't quote me on that.
Have you picked out a radio yet?

why not just use a resistor?

In my old job we used to need DC to DC converter to run a 12V camera from a 24V supply. We would buy them from someone in Langley, but I can't remember who. I think it may be:

Their website is one of the worst I have come across, but they had a good line-up and seemed to always have stock of what we needed.

You'll have better luck looking for a DC to DC converter (http://www.powerstream.com/dc-dc.htm). (I haven't ordered from the link; it's just an example.)
