Hey,

My dads got a 1968 camaro that im hoping to buy off him so i got a couple questions first. Its got collectors plates so am i allowed to run headers, dynamat the interior, and add aftermarket cams? If not it wouldnt be a deal breaker just some things ive been wanting to do to it.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

For collector plates you are not supposed to alter the car as it came from the factory.

But I guess it depends on who you know because I was reading Performance Plus magazine that you can pick up from Lordco and the 53 chev pickup that is on the cover has a modern steering collom and bench seat from a Cadilac, CD player mounted in the dash, after market rims, front end from a 69 Camaro.

When I tried to get collector plates for my 55 Buick, the person I talked to on the phone said the carb and air cleaner that was from a 67 Camaro would disallow from getting the plates.

So if you know someone, you should be good to go.

yea it needs to be bone stock or have period correct parts at least. they will send someone out usually to do a crazy inspection and certify that it is a collector car. for all the hassle its not worth it really.

this one isnt mine but i call it my mistress as i end up spending more time with it than my wife. efi'd 383 stroker with a tremec 5 speed and curry 9" rear

Its already got the plates so would i just be able to leave it stock till i got it in my name and have it re inspected and then change out a few things?

If i were to change those parts after i had already obtained the plates would the insurance still be valid if i got in an accident? I may not have to worry about the collector plates as i think one of the restrictions is that no one under 25 can drive it? I drove ours for like 2 months whenever it rained cause my S10 had a dead wiper motor and never got pulled over so i dont know what the deal is there.

nice cars btw! My dads also got a 67 convertable with the hideaways. I think the midlife crisis has hit him. since barret-jackson this year hes bought a 1970 440/6 pack cuda, 1970 hemi cuda, 1971 hemi cuda convertable (as of yesterday), and the 1967 Camaro. The ****ty part is now theres no room in the garage to work on my taco. :cwm36:

Most likely the 53 Chev was insured as a modified collector vehicle. Details in the link below. Basically has to be 1958 or older and mostly a steel body, etc.

you just have to send in photos and get it re aircared
you will be fine with the mods you want to do since the car will still look period correct
just don't hack the dash for a cd player or install a 8" tach

havnt had a chance to run it down to the shop and put it on jackstands yet but i took it out to the tradex for that carshow today. Damn i miss driving this thing. Im getting the stock stereo redone by some company at the show so i can get fm radio and apparently play cds while still looking original. Thanks for the help guys.

The cam and dynamat won't matter cause no one will ever see them. For the headers, why not run ram horns? Period correct, flow well and you won't have to worry about re-tightening the bolts all the time.

Would the ram horns give me the same effect as long tube headers?

No they give you the same effect as shorty headers though. There's two sizes of ram horns though, the high po ones were 2.5" and the smaller ones were 2" I believe

I was doing a bit of a tune up on the camaro last weekend and now ive run into a couple issues. I changed the plugs and wires and shocks. While i was at work on sunday my dad decided to change the oil and threw the royal purple synthetic oil in. It runs great and has alot more throttle response and starts at first crank.

The issues im having is now there is a loud ticking coming from the motor. I assume its a valve tick though i just noticed a crack in the manifold which could be the culprit aswell. Would the synthetic be enough to cause this ticking? Also when i first started it up after my dad did the oil change it spat about a quarter liter of thick black oil out of the tailpipes. Any ideas?

We are considering doing turning this into a 383 stoker. The motor is a rebuilt 350 with 1500 miles on it.

What is the cut off year for getting modified collectors plates or at least being able to mod the motor a bit?

I dont know for sure but have heard that its not good to change oil to a synthetic if its not new or a fresh rebuild. it can be hard on seals etc... not a 100 percent just stuff i have heard

you cant break in a motor with synthetic, but u have 1500kms on it already so there shouldnt be a problem running it now.
the reason they say not to run synthetic on a old motor is because synthetic oils take care of sludge build up and most of the time that sludge build up in old motors is stopping the seals from leaking :D
