We call them a Commander. Maelthra is right, they are brought in when the lease gets too muddy 4 trucks to get around. Makes for along rigmove tho, but as they say, "time is money, the more time it takes, the more money i get"

why would it take longer than a regular bed truck?

If there is one maybe two of them working, they have to go into the lease, pick up a shack, then come out to where the trucks are waiting, then drop it & let them pick it up. The lease rd could be long, narrow, steep. any & all of these things jus add to the time it takes to move a rig. as for theses trucks hauling the buildings, can't be done, (on rd) due to hight restrictions. Off rd they could, but as mentioned, there slow...

Yeah, Northern AB kicks ass for the rigs you see up here, way better than anything you see down south or in BC. I'm currently sitting in the Husky TS parking lot out at Hwy 60 & 16 and you regularly see all sorts of that stuff rolling through, Grande Prairie's even better.. I feel small being around a lot of it in my 'Star.

What we used to call a "tundra runner", eh?
Reminds me of the military prime movers - talk about slow!

I'm up in dawson creek, and there are many big trucks like that. Grand Prarie seems to have the most though. Lines of massive trucks along side of the road by the tim hortons in the mornings :) My friend works for a company called Tollestrup and they have many large trucks. Some of the stuck pics are just awesome. They had a 40ton picker to the top of the tires in mud. These rigs have HUGE tires too. All these big trucks work in the oil patches.
