How the heck are you supposed to change the pulley on an alternator without damaging the pulley/fan??

they make special pulley removers for those wonderful pressed on pulleys. bonus is you'll need it for the power steering pump as well. princess auto has them, about $30

These alternators have a threaded shaft and a large nut holding the fan on. How do you hold the rotating assy from turning when taking the nut off??

if u have an impact just put a glove on, hold the pulley and rattle it off

the closest thing I have to an impact gun is one of those things you hit with a hammer to loosen a tight nut or bolt.

OK rather than assuming it's newer junk as I did previously  ... I took the time to look it up ... the nut is a 15/16" and as always the procedure dictates ford's special tool :confused2 ... looks like you should be able to pull it off using an allen key to fit in the shaft (don't know what size but you'll figure it out) so as to hold it still while using the aforementioned wrench size to turn the nut.
Have Fun :D

I tried the allen wrench approach.. not a chance.
Gotta get the ability of impact tools. Finally found a shop just closing (8:30 fri nite) and it took 30 seconds to swap pulleys. maybe less. well worth the 10 bucks I offered if they would stay open and help. Now the Bronco can charge again. (no pun intended, well maybe)and this time
