Anyone out there ever had any experience makeing a aluminum dash for a late 70's ford pickup. i am replacing the whole dash with a custom made one. just looking for anyideas or pictures, i dont want the dash so look like crap when im done though.

I've made a custom dash for my Wrangler and I do have a '72 F250 and thought of doing the same thing.

On my truck it looks as though the dash has been factory welded into the cab, may be a little hard getting it out or even modifying it for some aftermarket gauges.

i made a custom dash for my sterio surround. my nice clean trim job turned into a hack job so i cut up some alumin. checkerpateto cover up the gaping hole
first i rough cut it to its length and height on the table saw with a CARBIDE blade. then i used the jigsaw to get the countours right, and then finally filed it to its finished shape. the layout was fairly easy on my toyota b/c it has a cheezy stick on wood dash, so i broke out the heat gun and removed the "wood" and stuck ot to the checkerplate.

Wow, i'm going to sound like a cheap bugger on this one. :)

I'm making a custom dash too, but the hole saw I need is 4.5 inches from Home Depot. That and the drill bit is like $50 bucks.

The only way I can warrant buying these parts is if I make another dash for someone else.

I'm going with aluminum checkerplate also. I've got an empty hole below and to the right of the steering wheel where the cargo light should be (1985 Dodge) so i'm going to mount my Sirius radio in that spot.

I'm wondering how clean the aluminum welds look when they are wirefed. And if they can be buffed out a bit to keep it nice looking.
