I'm not completely positive myself... but i believe it has to do with the weight of the vehicle.
LT can hold higher weight than P, since most cars are lighter then trucks.

An LT tire will have a higher load rating, meaning it has a stronger carcass, and is more resistant to flats than a P rated tire - a very good thing off road. It also means the side wall has less give to it, meaning a slightly rougher ride.

The LT-235 has a 6 ply C rating where as the P235 is a lighter casing it doesn't have a load rating. The P235s were mainly designed for the old station wagons you know those old models and heavier cars. Allot of those old land yachts were heavy beasts.
If you have a Ford Ranger or a 1/4 ton truck the P235s will probably do fine but if you have a half ton truck like a F-150 then your better off with the LT-235s.

If you mainly travel on pavement I think you should be fine. Tires are a little cheaper over the LT-235s. The P235s will ride a little smoother.
