Going from 22 PSI to 10 PSI is starting to be a pain every trip. I've been looking at "tire deflators" that you just thread on and they take your tires to a pre-set pressure. Anyone had expereince with these?
How much are they, and where can I get them (guessing NSOR has them)...?

just go to canadian tire and buy a valve core puller (2-3 bucks) it it will deflate your tires very very quickly. takes me about 15 sec. per tire to get from 22 to 4 psi with my 36s.

I was looking for something that at least showed the pressure when deflating. I really want something that does all the work for you though.

make em...there is a write up on them somewhere...take a black paperclip...theose ones with the steel wire handles that clamp together...you know??? the handles fold down...anyways, I will look for pic if needed
dril a hole through the top (not the 'clamps') and just use a bolt and two nuts... it would go bolt, nut, top of paerclip you drilled, nut. then jsut adjsut the bolt so it sticks through enough that when you clip the valve stem the screw will push down on the valve, releasing just the right amount of air...

I understand what this contraption would look like, but what I don't understand is how lets out just the right amount of air?? Wouldn't it just keep on draining?

I won a set of Oasis deflators, they're great. http://www.off-road.com/jeep/reviews/oasis.htm and automatic.
I also have some cheap ones, I forget who makes them, screw them on and let the air out, they screw together for storage so you dont lose them all.
Staun makes an automatic one as well http://www.4by4connection.com/stauntirdef.html
The currie is the fastest, but not automatic http://www.rockcrawler.com/techreports/curriedeflator/currie3.htm
It seems everyone and their dog is making them these days http://www.billssportshop.com/fishingaccessories/tirebuddy.html
Make your own with a guage on it

Can someone with a Commercial auto tire deflator check it out and see if it works? If it really is just the ammount of pressure put put down on teh stem, it would be easy to make one of these.
Even if they weren't exact, you could get your tires close and do the rest with a normal tire guage.

hey goof,
i agree it is more convient to have these tire deflators but to buy the oaisis ones it's like $100(nsor)...personally i wouldn't dish the $100 out, but if i got them for x-mas that's another story :D...
besides..your tires are 31's @ 22psi and u need to go down to 10psi that's not that bad is it?...:p

Woah, wasn't expecting $100. I always forget the damned exchange rate!
I have a quick draft of a plan to make my own. Basically a washer, then a 1" long tube, then a nut.
Those three things together (washer on the bottom) would let you hold it over the stem (washer would hit the rubber part). You when thread in a bolt until it applies enough pressure to the steam to get the tire PSI you want. Throw on a lockwasher and another nut and your set. I have a strange feeling this will cost a lot less than $100...I mean hell, I have most of the stuff in my garage!
I have a 3D model made up if you want to take a look. I might get a chance to build and test it tomorow.

Here's what I do: I bring an extra tire pressure gauge along ($2) and when I need to air down, I give it to my passenger and tell him to go to work. It cuts air-down time in half.
As for your home-made idea, how would you set the device to make it release just the right amount of pressure? I think it's hard to make it accurate, or it might take a long time near the end anyways. If I was to fabricate something, I would just go with the paper-clip method mentioned above, and I would time how long it takes to go from 22 to 10psi. Make four of those devices, and use the "lap" feature on your stopwatch as you install all four of them sequentially on your tires.
But personally, I enjoy the smell of the inside of my tires too much to forego the pleasure of airing down manually at the start of the trip.

Ditto... :laugh :redneck :mullet
Personally, I wouldn't bother with the fancy deflators, I just full the valve cores (all four at the same time) and wait till they started to whistle (that was always at 9.5PSI) and then run around to put them back in. Done in less then 5 mins. I'd then spend the next ten minutes shooting the breeze, wheeling on the "entry" obstacles to the trail or heckling the people with the deflators who were taking too long! :D

I got mine for my birthday. I like 'em but they are way too expensive. Is is definitely faster to just pull the valve stems out. On my truck we just let the air out until no more comes out, that seems to work about right :-). ( actually we just wait until the air stops whistling as it rushes out. It pretty consistantly gives me around 10psi )
