started my swap this week..................... I picked up an 85 solid that would have looked better out in a pasture some where. The swap kit is from Trail Gear. I went with the 5" springs. I re geared the diff with 529s to match the rear and took my birffs to Travis @ Killer to be smurfed. Hopefully have the smurfs back early this week so I can start rebuilding the front end.
I spent the first week stripping the solid axle down, cleaning, wire brush sanding, cutting, grinding, washing, and finally painting the NEW front end. I also stripped the IFS out.
Next is to start torching of the old ifs hangers, bump stops ect...........
Then rebuild the solid and start maucking up the purches ect.........
I'll post some pics this week and update my progress later in the week aswell. :beer

Hopeing to have the front axle built and maucked up to the truck by Sunday night!

Bobby Long proved aisin hubs are the best you can get on his axle testing machine. They outperformed, Warn, Superwinch and Mile Marker by a (no pun intended) mile.
They are also the lowest profile hub available, which is a big deal because I always seem to be jamming rocks into mine so I couldnt imagine having hubs that stick out even more.

i wheeled lots in the summer at at bigwhite and im welded front and havent broken a asin hub.
Sounds promising for aisin hubs................... I'll have to see how my warns stand up. There way fuc*ing better than the mile markers, but I still see some flause in comparision with the aisins. They stick out further from the wheel more, however this should not effect me to much because of the 1.5" spacers I end up about the same as i was before the swap as for clerance is consurned. The spring which loads the hub to lock is definitly inferior to the aisin spring. Its far weeker and seems like years of use will probably end in flat springs.
I guess I'll just have to see how they perform on the trail in comparison with the stock ones.
Anyway, axles got the rubber on and shes ready to bolt up. Brake lines are done and hubs are on (which fit great). Warn provides a retaining washer with bolt that threads into the end of the smurf. Welding will be sunday, if shes done by sunday night I'll be taken her for a boot........:cwm30: :cwm30: :cwm30:

ahhhhhh ya its gusseted and the bolts are faced with the nipples out of harms way (into the truck except for the rear top shackle bolts, but there protected by the body mount gussets). other than that I dont know what ur talken about.
as far as whats left, brakes, steering, stabalizer, drive shaft and bump stop that weld underneath the frame.

When I put my shocks on I realized that there is 5" on 1 and 4.5" on the other of piston remainig out of the can. for 14" shocks this might be a problam. once the bump stops on the frame it should limit the piston from compressing any more than about 3.5" so I'll have to see what it looks like once there on and I stuff one side too compress the other. wtf

ya I here ya, the steerings preaty good now other than the steering wheel is about 20% out one way. I'll center the tires drop the pitman arm then center the wheel and bolt her back up and she should be mint. The brakes still bites hard one way, I even had them power bled and set up. I kept my pads from my ifs, so im thinkin that its got to be that the pad is poorly woren to suit the old rotors. I'm goin to throw some new pads in and hopefuly that should fix it. other than that I just need a drive shaft and im good to wheel.

Steerings not to bad now, but still pulls to the left when braking hard even after new pads. I'm goin to pull the caliper of and swap it for a new 1. The other is not even 2 years old so then they'll both be in good shape. hopefully this will fix it.

does it pull under normal braking or just hard braking?. Does it pull to the left?
4runnin

If the brakes are applyed smoothley Its not to bad, but if I throw my foot down harder than that it starts pullin to the left.
Pw82
March 4th, 2007, 10:27 am
its probably from the front end diving down, which pushes the dragling up, which causes it to turn left.
4runnin

as for the pulling issue when braking, I guess the big ugly gusset on the drivers side of the axle was for the stock 85 which atached to the draglink or somthing like that and prevented this from occuring. So much for that, I grinded the ugly fu*ker off. I'm picken the 12" T/G drive shaft exstention up tomorrow. Need to tweek the drag link a bit more, It still wants to drift to the right a bit.

Are you planning on clearancing you IFS front CV and then adding the tg shaft? Brent and i did mine last week and there was hardly any room left for compression using the TG shaft and a single tcase. This was on a 95 pickup with the axel moved 1+ inches ahead of stock. you basically have to butt the end of the shaft up against the cv and weld a small amount of tube in there to put it all together. we used less than 2 inces of Dom tubing between the cv and slip shaft and it still only allowed for 2.5 inches or less of compression.
4runnin
March 7th, 2007, 07:41 pm
could u not just leave 2"s of the origanal tube to weld the slip end too? and if u dont have enough compresion, just buck of some of the new female reciever tube and slip shaft.
just my thoughts...........................later
toyotamike
March 7th, 2007, 10:03 pm
you could cut off and reuse some of the original tubing but it was tough to get a nice square edge on the tube, we used a pipe cutter first but it beveled the edge in an made it difficult to fit the end of the silp shaft into it. We ended up taking the original pip off the cv with a lathe and then cutting dom to fit. I still have quite a bit of the tubing at the shop if you need some. I didnt cut the slip down because then you start losing some of your extension and my plan is to do dual cases in the near future. Right now i have about the absolute minimum compression possible.
4runnin
March 7th, 2007, 11:02 pm
max exstention is good, Im just thinkin about if u run out of compression u'll end up cracken ur tcase. So as long as ur not flexin the sh*t out of it until u go dual cases that should work. as for the dom tubing I should be good................ thanks. Im thinkin I can leave enough of the origanal stock on the cv to weld to, but i'll have to see. I havent even looked yet. How long did ur shaft end up being when fully compressed. that sounds fu*ked .......................lol
later
toyotamike
March 8th, 2007, 12:28 am
i think it was around 24-25 inches, the cv adds about 6.5 inches, i am also running a high pinion up front so it would make the driveline shorter. It was roughly 27.5 inches from diff flange to tcase flange.
1/2toy1/2chevy
March 8th, 2007, 01:35 am
shouldnt need more then 3" of compression
Brentolsten
March 8th, 2007, 11:06 am
max compression ull need is 4 inches to be safe but 3 is just fine to danny if u measure around 28 from center of flange to center of flange ull be laughin. heat up the tube on the cv red hot or close to and the slip shaft falls right in.
4runnin
March 8th, 2007, 07:55 pm
drive shaft will be bolted up by tomorrow. theres 3"s for compression. I've talked to a few people and they all say that 3"s should be fine so I went with that. this way a gain more exstention on the shaft. I used a chop saw to get a square cut and cut off enough to leave 2"s of the origanal stock pipe to weld to, which when welded up to the new exstention will leave me with my 3"s. I also added some diff breathers with valves at the top of the tubeing to ensure minimal if any back flow of unwanted substances.
thanks for the info on the drive shaft...................:beer

threw in the drive shaft today. it fits sweet..................... with 4"s out of the slip yoke for compression, it leaves 8"s of extension.
took it for a boot in 4wheel.................... it works ........................ that and trying to turn around on pavement with ur tires aired up to 30+ psi and in 4hi = a 10 point turn............ thats about all I got out of that drive.
goin up eagle this weekend, super siked!!!!!!! SWAPS DONE
