I need a little help in diagnosing a small problem I have with My 1986 Bronco2. Its 2.9L V6 4x4.

Here is the problem I have. When I start the car in the morning to go to work everything is fine, but when I stop for breakfast in the morning and turn off the truck when I get back in and start it again the engine is somewhat sputtery like it wants to die. In fact, anytime I start the car after I just shut it off the engine does what I explained. If the truck has been sitting for a while then I start it it does not do this. What could be my problem?

First, you need to figure out if you have a car or truck. Then, get rid of the Ford and all your problems will go away.

It's people like you that make sites like this SO pleasurable. I bet you like it when people reply to your posts with something that has absolutly no relevance what so ever. Thanks though for your .02

If it only does it when it's "warm" check for intake leaks
you can do this with a small propane torch with a rubber hose
on the end, open the gas valve & move the hose around the intake
(not the throttle body) ...don't light the torch
if there is a leak when it's running warm then the rpm should rise
when the propane is near it.

Propane never heard of that one ill have to try that next time im looking for a intake leak. I use intake cleaner it makes the engine studder when you spray the leak.

You could also be running a little to rich or your choke could be stuck on a tiny bit

Don't worry Knight, he drives a Toyota, so Murphy's Law already has plans for him. http://www3.telus.net/cbradley/Smileys/hysterical_smiley.gif

I agree with 90si (nice name by the way, I used to own one of them), check for leaks. Other than that possibly over or under fueling. Did you notice any black smoke coming from the tail-pipe? You might have a bad carb.

The 86 2.9 is a fuel injected engine. My dad has the same vehicle and the sputtering and stalling problem has occurred a couple of times. Each time, I've found that the throttle valve gets gummed up with deposits. Just pull off the main hose at the throttle body and clean out the stuff that has accumulated there.

Maybe someone in ford section would know?

Injected eh? Cool!

Well, then I will treat this the same as my '85 302 EFI, and I agree with asleepatthewheel; the throttle body's (for lack of a better term) tend to get coated with carbon. In fact, the whole upper intake should be cleaned on a regular basis. Before I rebuilt the engine, I used to pull the throttle body off once a month and clean it thoroughly. If the cleaning doesn't help, it may be a bad sensor (TPS, IAC EGR etc). You may also want to check for codes.
