View Full Version : ARB compressor not good for tires?

I am trying to figure out which compressor to get to engage my ARB air lockers, and also be used for airing up my tires after a day on the trail. I don't expect to run any air tools without getting a tank.

I have heard the ARB air compressor is worthless for airing up tires. Is this true?
I know there are better ones out there, but the ARB seems much easier to hook up to air lockers and even switches for the dash.

Anyone have experience with this compressor, or setting up another compressor to ARB air lockers?

I have been looking at the ARB standard compressor kit, and also the Viair 450H: http://www.trail-gear.com/compressors.html

Thanks

I use my ARB compressor to air up my 35x12.50's. I wouldn't call it worthless, but it's quite slow. When I can, I end up mooching air from someone with a real OBA system. I'd say that something like a York is around 4x faster from my experiences.

I should also add that the air hose and fittings that come with the ARB air kit are crap. You'd be far better off going to Princess Auto and buying the fittings/hose there.

Chris.

The ARB compressor (#RDCKA) will inflate tires, but it is slow. Way back before I had OBA, we were at a gas station in Squamish; my buddy filled one tire with his ARB vs the other three with the gas station's air.

If you are set on an electric compressor, then ViAir is the best choice.

As for wiring, it is pretty easy; just switches, relays and wire. You could buy the ARB harness and switches if you wanted to keep it even easier.

Personally, I would never give up my York compressor; 16psi to 34 psi = 50 seconds per tire. http://www3.telus.net/cbradley/Smileys/thumbs_up_1.gif

Bronco Boy, You got any links to that sort of setup? I'm not stuck on any one configuration. I would rather get something better, I just dont know much about OBA setups yet.

Chris, thanks for the first-hand info. Thats better then nothing I guess. I would like to go with a "real OBA" system, but I dont know where to start.

Any info to help me figure out what I need would be great.

thanks dudes

Check out my OBA page (http://chrisb.users.superford.org/Bronco/Projects/On-Board_Air/On-Board_Air.html). If you have any questions, ask away.

I am not to familiar with OBA on the Toy's, but I know Luc just (or is going to) put a York in his 22re 4-Runner, so maybe he can help out.

The hardest part of putting a York on a 22 RE was building a mount for it and fitting it all in. But, works great. Real glad I've done it. Give me a call, if you want to see the install, 604-726-2525.

I think you should go buy a new camera cable and post some pictures. :finger_1:

Would be hard to take good pics of the mount, really tucked in there.

Have loads of good pics of Joe and Sonny from last weekends run.

OK, cable hunting this PM.
