I've heard the reds are pretty good too. Walmart has them for a decent price.

i've heard of a few red duds being circulated, but i've yet to hear one negative comment about the yellows. i'm sure that optima's are better than a regular battery and will last considerably longer under the same conditions. and ya, they are pretty much mandatory if you are running a winch/big stereo or anything else that draws a lot of power, but for most people that are interested in them just because of their reputation, are they really worth 2x and 3x the price of a regular battery? i think not.

Optimas are built differently -- Instead of flat plates and liquid acid they use spiral plates and an absorbant mat with gelled acid. So when you go inverted the acid won't leak out. Plus they handle vibration and getting bounced around on a trail.
You might need a different battery tray and tiedown since they're a sized differently than "stock" batteries.
red - automotive cranking
yellow - automotive deep cycle
blue - marine

reds usually used for engine power while the yellows are for a secondary battery (power for the amp in the back). I have a red in my civic. Went snowboarding one day and left my headlights on, I was up there for 3 hours. Came back and freaked that I left my lights on but it still cranked! And the red is cheaper by abit

No need to mod the battery hold down. They come with a replacement, scalloped GM-style hold-down block (if it hasn't been lost or thrown away).
I run dual red-tops on my diesel. I've also accidentally left my lights on once - for a solid 8 hours :cwm24: Still started.
The Exide Orbital is a battery of the same spiral/gel cell construction.
I would not run a yellow-top on the main charging circuit. A Deep Cycle battery is meant to be deep cycled - not short duration high demand spikes and constant charging. That's what the red-top is for.

lots of people run yellows as the only battery in their daily drivers and do fine.

I have put blue tops in aircraft as aircraft batteries SUCK. starting a 550cubic inch air cooled flat 6 when youve screwed up and flooded it or doing a hot start sometimes requires ALOT of cranking that an aircraft battery just wont hold up to. we left the magnetors off and cranked an optima for 5 minutes continuesly, stoped for a minute and cranked again for another few minutes just to test the optima. it never let up.

Did some searching on the net and the spiral wound Eliminators that Crappy Tire sells are made by Exide.

The Costco in Abby hasn't had Optimas for a few months...... at least when I've had a look. Do other Costco locations still have them?

When I bought red-tops ( just over a year ago) Walmart and Costco were within $5.
I have dealt with Polar Battery now for other items, and I will likely use them again.

It was only a matter of time before the brand engineering came through ;)

for us 4x4 guys a yellow top is a better choice. two of them would even be better. also there are two sizes of yellow, red or blue top. if twin set up wont work for you, get a single bigger size. a blue top is the same as a yellow top but with more terminalos. handy for more hook-ups.

That sounds more like a starter endurance test than a battery endurance test...;)

Doesn't hold a charge?! you must have a bad bananna from the bunch, redtops rule, and are cheaper...
I'm sure Optima has warranties on thier batteries.
