okay i'm looking for an aggressive A/T (235x75x15) to put on my XJ. My wife wants me to keep the price under $500....hah ha haaaaaaaaaa good luck i said. anyways what do you guys reccomend for someone on a budget? I will be driving lots into the Kootenays & Okanagan, some moderate off roading (still a stocker) and lots of driving on lease/logging roads. My wife wants something that looks aggressive like the STT's or an M/T but i want the sipes for snow travel.
what tire do you think would fit my needs? and if you can price & place to get them.
Thanks.......i've called around and looked everywhere and am having trouble deciding.

BFG AT'S, you can never go wrong with them. Probably the best AT on the market!

AT's suck. Buy a mudder from a place that will sipe them, you will never go back to at's.

I remember reading wrangler AT's were ranked pretty high in magazine test. And owner feedback. Maybe check them out?

You get what you pay for. I've got BFG AT's, 31/10.5, Big O Tire, $800 cash, mounted and balanced. There pretty good in the deep snow and general offroading.
Keep an eye on the used tires section of the board.

I did and the Wrangler MT/R's are $200+ ea. I find Goodyear is horribly overpriced.

The used section has not much for a stock size tire. I haven't installed a lift yet so i can't even fit 31's. :cwm10:
I was thinking about Cooper tires too, i'll let you know what i decide.
I'v been getting some BIG variations in pricing for BFG A/T.......Costco $145 up tp Kal Tire $189

MT/R and ATS are completely different tires. the wrangler A/T wont be as pricey as an MT/R. but the bfg mall terrains always get good ratings. costco seems to have the best price on em, but apparently they'll only fit stock sized tires on, and no bigger. i thought 31's are stock size for cherokee's..no? whats your oem size and how much lift do you need to fit 31's? i would have thought you could fit at least 31's on a stock XJ...
might also want to check out pro comps AT, nitto terra grappler has been getting good reviews, as well as coopers. but if youre undecided..go with costco bfg's...

I'm running bfg at and can only say good things about them, amazing in snow and do very well offroad.
I tried to stick my truck today for two hours in Vancouver including going up Oak street from 4th to Broadway which the city had closed (had to jump the curb) and the truck walked it.
Tried lots of hills in 2wd and was still amazed by these tires.
No contest in my opinion, super quiet on the road too...

A/T's in my opinion work fine i've known several guys that do really well wheeling, and they are good om road too, maybe check nsor they had a sale going for a little while there
and as for max tire size I wouldn't go bigger than a 30" or you'll get some serious rubbing..
I personally run the MTR's and I do agree they are pretty over priced damn well that and i'm runnong 16" rims

Friend of mine bought five Cooper Discoverer ST from Excel Midway tires in Mission in the 255/85R/16 (33" x 10.5") size mounted and balanced for around $1,100 taxes included. So your much smaller 29" should be quite a bit less.
Cooper truck tires have been getting great reviews, and they seem to be built quite well to take heavy loads and use. Traction seems to be quite good also for a more aggressive AT type pattern.
I've had good luck with BFG AT KO in the past also. Especially great for winter conditions compared to other truck tires...but I definitely didn't like them when there was a little bit of mud on the trail.

I've had nothing but luck with my Uniroyal laredo HD/T. Id put them up against any other A/T tire in snow and sticky ****.

2500km? most people do that within a month. if you mean 25000 km..they'll last way more than that. i've had mine since nov 05, and put just under 20,000 and they're nowhere near done. my truck is the daily/only driver too so it sees alot of pavement...
improper tire rotation, inflation & misalignment will kill your tires in that amount of time. perhaps your sources had some if not all of those issues...

Huh?
First of all, a light truck tire will be more suited for trucks and off highway use due to the better sidewalls.
Secondly, I don't even see the BFG AT's being offered in a passenger rating. Looks like they are all LT.

Where did you see a BFG AT in P235/75R/15?

YOu could have gotten pro-comps in 30x9.5 for nearly that price mounted and installed in october...but thats a non-issue now i suppose. I paid 587$ for a set of 31's for the all terrrains.
If your looking for a good alternative to the BFG, the Pro-comp allterrain is a similar tread patter, 80 000km treadwear compared to the BFG, doesnt pick up rocks like ht BFG, is quieter than teh BFG and also has the severe weather rating.
They work just as well offroad, and are great on wet or snow conditions as well.
Im just surprised more people dont vouche for these, same offroad performance, cheaper and better road performance/wear/features. I think you lose out on the rim protector and lose 1 sidewall though.
Just my opinion since i was searching for new shoes only a month or 2 ago as well and compared to these 2, the pro-comp certainly was more appealing. Especially at that price. Even at full price i think they come out slightly cheaper than the BFG.

yah i saw the sale the last two days of OCT on NSOR's site. I wanted to shop around since i didn't quite know what i wanted yet.
Costco quoted me $791 all taxes in mounted & balanced. Do you know of anywhere that can beat that?
(I requested a quote from NSOR)

I have a set of BFG ATs 32 x 11 (or 11.5 haven't looked lately) x 15 that i'm swapping out because one of my rims (that i bought off bc4x4 used) is warped and I should really be running 16 inch rims on my truck. The tires are fine, they have 10,000 kms on them. If you want them I'd sell them for $450 with the rims 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern though, won't work on an XJ. They're good in the rain, better in the snow. Here they are on the truck:

I'm waiting for new rims, so they're still on the truck for another week or two.

I ran 31" BFG AT KO's on my Samurai when I still had it.
To be honest I didn't think they were that great. The tread never stayed clean and I got worse traction on ice than the M+S tires I had on previously. Despite the sidewall lugs, there was no comparison compared to the OK Tire Muds I later had in loose snow. I have no clue why everyone gives them such great reviews - to me they are an OK tire that is overpriced.
They were very tough and did wear extremely well, but after actually comparing them to other times on the little Samurai I wouldn't buy them again.
Me.

A/T's arent very good in the mud period....some is ok, but any sort of real mud is asking alot of any at tyre.

When I bought my 1998 Cherokee used, it came with a brand new set of Sport King A/Ts on it (235/75-15) and they actually worked pretty well year-round. They cleared mud surprisingly well for an A/T and handled snow like it wasn't there. Drove the truck from Calgary to Victoria in a December blizzard hauling a large U-Hell trailer and had no issues at all... well, I had some issues with overheating going through Roger's Pass and on the Coquihalla but that wasn't the tires fault...

The last pic wasn't the tire's fault either... just a little driver error. :D

For what you're looking for, you can't go wrong with the BFG AT ko's. I ran them as my 'snow' tires for a couple of years and they were a solid all-around tire for both the lower mainland and in the interior.
I've never really liked the look of the tread pattern (looks too closed up for me, without much by way of water dispersion channels), but the tires were a decent price and I knew many people who had been satisfied with them - thought I'd give them a go. They worked out well.
They're a relatively quiet tire, and I like the square shoulder on them. Good in snow for an AT.

My 31's look small on my 4.5" lift. Same deal here about 15,000 km on them BFG KO'S

http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/newproductpage.php?id=6 ??? i've got them mounted and have run them on road - comparatively quiet tire with good manners. Unfortunately, haven't got any off-road time on em yet so no report there till later. I do like the look of the sipes in the tread blocks for traction though and they have the same clearing blocks in the tread as other cooper tires that I've heard excellent reports on.

I have some aggressive 235 AT's mounted and balanced on bronco II steel rims if you are interested. The bolt pattern is the same, not sure about center hole and offset.

I ran some 33/12.50/15 Big O XT's for a while, until someone stole my truck, and thought they were a great tire for an all terrain. Fairly aggressive, cleaned well, a good price and the best warranty around.
