I.W.E. they cost more, but they do it right the first time; they did my jeep. I had NSOR do my Dodge's read axle this summer and it took 3 times to get it right.
I.W.E is doing the front axle on Tuesday for me.

How long did they say it would take? How much they quote you?

I need a carrier ($100) and they said the fronts usually take longer than the rear so they want it first thing in the morning. About $500 total is what I'm expecting. They're rate is around $90 per hour, but if you consider I didn't have my truck for 3 days with NSOR, plus having it towed there the last time, I didn't exactly save anything. This is IWE's off-season, so I called them on Friday and they could have done it Monday for me if I could get it there. I'll post the total cost Tuesday night.

Ok, so my bill was a little more than expected. I asked them to change the rear diff oil since it was already up on the hoist and they said they'd noticed the posi wasn't working when they were moving it around the shop. Fair enough, it had been acting weird in the last couple of months, so they'd pop the cover and have a look. The clutch pack was broken, so they took a good look to make sure nothing was damaged from floating clutch bits (can't bitch about that, it was original and i didn't ask for it to be replaced with the gear change). Most of the bearings were good, but the pinion bearing was cooked, it had been over tightened by NSOR, there is discolouration on the bearing from heat, new pinion bearing and seals. IWE also said the gear pattern looked like it had been done by me in my back yard, so they fixed it when everything went back together. The other seals and bearings, carrier and case were ok.
So here's the total bill broken down as it is on the receipt:
FRONT:
1 D44 carrier - $75
2 L 80/90 Oil - 12.50
I supplied the gears and install kit (Yukon's bought at NSOR, install kit was the wrong one for my axle, but IWE traded me my kit bearings and seals for the correct ones, no extra charges)
REAR:
1 Small Parts Kit - $95
Bearings and Seals - 78.52
1 clutch pack - 125.00
Parts Total: 386.02
Labor: Front & Rear Diff strip/clean/install: 795.00
Sub Total: $1181.02
GST: 70.86
PST: 82.67
Total: 1334.55
I'm pretty sure Colin said the labour breakdown is $450 for front diff's, $350 for rear. If you bring the diff in on its own. (less things for them to have to work around, less shop space taken up for other guys to work around, their shop is pretty small). The book rate is a higher if its in the truck; he gave me the cheaper rate because I had my 8.8 built there.
Lesson learned; buy parts from NSOR (Yasu's really good and its hard to beat their prices), but stay the hell away from the NSOR shop. Pay the extra bit to have it done right. I've beat on my 8.8 that IWE did a tone of custom work on for two years now without any problems.
With the snow IWE's pretty busy right now, seems guys with trucks are blowing up their front diffs :omg:
But I dropped the truck of last night and picked it up tonight. They gave me a car to drive.

WOW thats alot of money... I guess u get what u pay for. I didnt think i was looking at $450 just for labor on my front diff.
So did u go 4.56's in your dodge?

4.10s. Its a street princess for pulling the other toys around, so I'm not going over 33s with it. 4.10s gave it a stock feel again with the 33s.
I agree, the labour is steep; but consider I was without my truck for 3 days, plus leaving work early each time to get it, plus having to pay for the truck to be towed to NSOR the last time plus now popping for more parts to fix what was done wrong in the first place and they didn't give me a car to drive while my truck was being worked on.....I would have been much further ahead paying the extra labour and know I don't have to worry about it.

heh did you get the volvo to drive for a rental car?
thats not too bad of a price for the install,
i brought them the diffs already stripped and cleaned, figure if you do the dirty job yourself its always cheaper...

$700-$800 just in labor! Sounds kind expensive. I've got no clue what I'm talking about, but need to get some gears installed eventually. I've pulled r&p out of avehicle before, wasn't that complicated. Is that really what it's gonna cost me to get this done. A grand for gears and installation, holy ****. i better get saving.

you have to make sure you got the backlash and stuff right, ive been trying to figure it out on some of my spare diffs, but its mind boggling

Do they remove the axles from the truck when they re-gear them? Cuz if they do then you should just pull the diff on your own and bring it to the shop to save some labour costs.
I brought a bare 8.8(ie no shafts) to IWE to have them install gears and an ARB. When I took it home to re-install my shafts, there wasnt enough clearance between the ring gear/crosspin for me to remove it. I told IWE this and they handled it very well. I would definately go back to them. It cost $350 to get it done.

For the record in case someone digs this thread up later on .... Al from NSOR credited my account for the cost of the bearings that had to be replaced.

does anyone have an 'in' with iwe? i contacted them re: regear+arb, and was told they dont do jobs with customer supplied parts anymore. only parts they sell & provide. any truth to this? or any other recommendations for regear+arb instal? i'd rather try local first before i look elsewhere for installers...
thanks

I went in to IWE a few years ago, wanting a quote for front and rear gear install as well as Trak/Loks. After I waited almost an hour while he farted around, he quoted me a price 20% higher than Lordco on the ring & pinion sets. When I mentioned that the gear cost was a bit high (politely), he got all offended that I had done my homework first!
Of course, that was my cue to look elsewhere to spend my $1500+. Then a friend of mine had the diff in his F-350 done there. 2 months later it was toast, and IWE told him to go hang for it.
Personally, I'd rather attempt it myself than give IWE a cent of my hard-earned money...

I had supplied the ARB and the gears. The only thing that he said to me was that they wont warrenty the parts. That was back in october 06.

IT's about $100 in measuring equipment from KMS and some time to read up on how to do it right. I've done 8 sets now, no problems. With a Dana axle you need a special bearing puller ($400) do set the shims. Third member diffs are actually quite simple.
go to richmond gear's website where they have detailed instructions on their site.

talk to a mechanic at a tranny or driveline shop
maybe you could work out a side deal for more than half the hourly rate
i got a guy from a local tranny shop to do if for 30 and hour
costed me 150 and is running great since no warranty though

nick its not hard to do. if u get bored one day gimme a shout and ill come to the shop ill try and show ya. you just need to figure out what shims to start with and go from there. it also makes it alot easier to get some old bearings and hone the ID out just enough to be able to be pressed on and off by hand instead of by using an actual press. makes it easier to change the shims. you want the pattern in the middle of the root and the land, and a bit towards the toe.

i've done quite a few diffs for myself and friends, but thats what you get for working at coast power train for 8 years. i mostly do big gears in big trucks but there all the same.
