so the other night i'm lyin' in bed sleeping at 3.30 am , when my buddy who lives in his camper at the end of my property phones , flippin' out 'cause some kids are banging on his windows . so i get dressed , go out and confront the driver who is staggering around my driveway . turns out this guy was trying to impress his buddy and their girlfriends by driving up the road to my place , which at the time was covered in snow . guess he thought because he saw my tracks he could make it too . however he got to the end of my tracks , kept going and when he couldn't go any further , tried to back up and directly slid his bone stock toyota tacoma ( including all season tires ) off the road . not way far , but no way he was going to get out . any equipped 4 by guy would have had this thing out in an hour , less with a buddy pulling , but this guy had NOTHING , much less knowledge or equipment .
anyway , he was obviously drunk , as were his friends , and being a bit of a prick about the situation to boot , insisting that i use my truck to get him out , that i'm going to have bad karma if i don't , blah , blah . he leaves his friends behind and walks down the hill to go get a tow truck . i'm trying to be a nice guy about the whole thing , so i drive the friends off the hill , and surprisingly , meet drunk buddy heading up the hill with a tow truck driver he has managed to convince to give it a try . there is nothing worse than a stuck tow truck , especially when they are about to mess up my only road access , so i do him a favor and send him back down the hill .
two days later , he hires a rubber tire back hoe to clear the road and pull him out .
sure , i have a come - a - long i could have used to get him out , but i'm sure not about to send a pissed driver back out onto the road , and i figure if i make it too easy for the guy ( early 20's ) what lesson will have been learned ? i told him whatever the machine time costs , it would have been a lot cheaper than a drunk driving charge . . . . .
rant / vent over . . . . what would you have done ?

Nice work! I would have done the same thing! Hopefully he learned a valuable lesson. Forget the drunk driving charge, he was obviously not in the right frame of mind to be driving in the first place, and had you pulled him out, he could have easily killed someone else on the road or injured the passengers that were with him.

I would have called the cops and let him get a drunk driving charge.

I would have charged as much as i thought he could pay(my rule is if they wheel drunk and the result puts buddy in trouble he must pay to pull him out) and then find a designated driver. If not then involve the cops, they iritate me as well but it would bother me, I think if i sent a drunk on his way and he hit somebody esspecialy so close to home.

I woulda called the cops too.
It's almost second nature to me, working in a restaurant. We get people who come in drunk, and try to get more drinks. We tell them no, and offer to call a cab. If they go for the car, we call the cops and give them the license plate number. Often times we hear that they have 2-3 other calls about their erradic driving.
Get these people off the road!

:agree:
Some people have to learn the hard way or they just don't learn.

i would have asked him how much money it costs. if it wasnt enough, then i'd offer to call a tow truck and (without buddy knowing..) cops. cops can give em a ticket and viola..a tow truck can come and impound the truck.
but good on ya for at least not helping him get back out on the road. drunken idiots deserve to learn the hard way. had he not been drunk and willing to help get his truck out, i maybe would have helped. just a bit though...

thanks for the support guys . . . . i felt like i was doing the right thing .
didn't want to see the guy get back on the road definitely , certainly didn't want to risk damaging my vehicle at 3.30 am to get him moving again , but i did want him to at least have to go through enough trouble and money to make him think about his actions . and i'm sure the friends let him know he wasn't scoring any points either .
as well , i live somewhat isolated ( for whistler , anyway ) and i didn't want my family to have to worry about some drunken idiot bent on revenge later on .
i think my approach worked : the day he came back to get the truck he was in full apology mode , and owned up to everything he did , for whatever that's worth :violin

Isn't that called the sober second thought??
Not a bad deal, Find a drunk guy wandering about your property at 3:30 in the morning and get the drunk guy to hire a machine in there to do some road improvements as compensation....
I don't think I would have been too helpful in getting the guy out either.
