I'm FINALLY getting my ass in gear and getting my PAL this weekend. It's not the Restricted, but at least it's a major step closer. After this alls I'll have to do is challenge the Restricted test with another guy in town that teaches that course. Well, that and pass, I mean!
Mwa ha ha!!! :cwm30:

Men...
And handgun owners... I sorta had it out with the teacher (who does not teach Restricted, I should mention) as he said you need to inform RCMP of your route to and from the range, and get a permit each time you take your gun to the range. I understood this to be the old school method, and now it's something on the lines of that you just get a one time permit (meaning you don't have to get one issued each time you leave the house with your gun) on the grounds that you're just going to and from a licensed handgun range... Anyone up on this?

i dont own any handguns but i got my restricted FAC, PAL is the old system if im remembering right, anyway, when I did my course a couple years back I was told you could get one travel permit which alowed you to transport your handgun to and from the gun range (no where else) as much as you liked. The only condition to get this transport permit is that you have to be a registered member of a gun range, and you can only transport it locally. So no transporting your handguns from rupert to victoria or anything like that. If your moving you get a different permit and you have to tell the RCMP and local polices your transporting it.
but dont take my word for it... go ask skidmark, he knows everything :redneck :redneck

No, the PAL replaces the FAC or CFAS. Maybe you're thinking of the POL (Possession Only) which doesn't exist any more?

yah thats right the PAL replaced the FAC, i just looked on my card. Too many abreviations for me, cant keep them all in line:soso

The last I heard, its been a few years since I've been to the range... is yes, you apply for one permit that allows you to transport to the range only (for which you have to show proof of membership each year, i think).
Now I would believe this to be correct, as I have yet to receive any updates from the CFC (Canadian Firearms Center) to tell me otherwise...
... okay, I spent some time web wheeling... heres the actual AAT (Application for Authorization to Transport) form
http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/online-en_ligne/form-assistance/PDFs/679_e.pdf
And Box 11 allows for scheduled transportation days...
And it doesnt look like you have to be a member of that range....
Heres the Actual Website...
http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/default_e.asp
Hope that helps you out Kelly,
Ryan

Good thing he is teaching, eh?
You can get a long term ATT (authorization to transport) restricted (or if you are lucky enough to be grandfathered and own prohibiteds) that states any range in BC, gun smith or gun show etc. It used to be that you had to be a member of a range in order to get an ATT but that has been removed.
Still haven't renew my ATT even though it doesn't cost anything. Just not enough time to get out to the range.
If I were you and you have any interested in restricted f/a down the road I would wait until you challenge or take the restricted class before sending in for you POL, PAL or whatever they are calling them these days. I can just imagine some 'star' at the CFC trying to figure out how to issue a restricted class when you already have an un-restricted license.

Congrats on the PAL
ATT are two types. Short term or long term. I got a short term one when I moved. It was good for half a day to move my toys. BC is pretty good about Long Term ones usually you get the gunsmith and approved ranges in BC and on written invitation within Canada. as well as up to 4 border crossings. My Att is in process of being renewed. There are several good ATT threads on Gunnutz. I use the same user name there.
Good shooting

I passed, 100% on the hands-on part, 96% on the written (I suck, I misread one question, and the other one was trying to trick me. I swear.).
Nows I just need to do the Restricted exam, which may take a while. Is it really a better idea to send them in together rather then seperate? I hear they take over a month to get back to you with your PAL card any ways...

Congrats.
Yep wait and send them in together.
A month if you are lucky. My renewal took over 4 months and I finally phoned. After close to 2 hours of the phone it was approved and got to me in the mail within a week. I imagine if I didn't phone it would have been more like 6 months.

I had better luck than that. When My PAL arrived it had an error. They had failed to carry over my 12(6) grandfathering on Acquistion. I phoned and left a message. I heard from them that day and had my corrected PAL in less than 10 days. There is a 28 day wait on new PALs and also on renewals. Additions or corrections seem to be much quicker. Again BC may be better than other places.
Good shooting

I'd love a Glock one day, but I'd be starting out with a Transfer of Ownership from my Dad for a .357 Magnum.

Thanks. I heard they have a lawful obligation to have it all completed within 28 days or something, but I guess the gov't turns a blind eye when it's them making the mistake, eh?

My first one took 10 days and my restricted took 3 mos. They are not obligated to do it in 28 days, there is a 28 day waiting period.

Ok now that is just not fair, I would give my left kiddney to have a 12(6) license. :whiteflag:

A friend who's bro is in the VPD said they're changing their standard issue side arm to something smaller and more accurate, but he didn't know what the model was. Anyone know what it is?

Sure there are less than 20 G-18's in Kanada. Most VPD Officers have enough trouble with a Berreta 92f, nevermind something that is full auto.
Less than 20 legally anyways.

Probably something like the RC's. The worst S&W pistol every made. The 12 pound DAO trigger takes some getting used to. But I guess that makes up for lack of training.
