So I am thinking of a shorter barrel for my 870. I have the 18.5 currently and would like something a bit more compact for hiking etc.

Looking at the Dlask barrels, probably a 12.5 since you don't have to modify the mag with an even shorter barrel.

Any suggestions / comments?

Not directly related to your question but if you need a gunsmith, Barry used to work for Dlask. Here is his web site http://www.bitsofpieces.com/
Barry is a pretty good gunsmith.

Always good to know a gunsmith or two.

Swapping barrels is pretty straight forward thought. I have an 18.5, 21 and 28 between two 870's. Just wondering how short to go for a short barrel.

I think 12.5 is the shortest you can go with a full stock and have it still un-restricted? I HG would be my first choice but the current CFC peoples figure not. Their perfect answer is just take a SG.

I have an 870 as well. Love it. I want the smooth slug barrel with the sites.

How much muzzle blast do you get with the 18.5" barrel? I don't know if I would want a 12 ga with a 12.5" barrel.. Would be fine for occasional/emergency use, though, I guess. Just my .02

I do understand the deal with a short shotgun for hiking as that would be about the only decent gun to stop/slow down something that's trying to eat you. LR

No, actualy the ideal gun would be my G21 (M21) loaded with 11 rounds of .45 super but the CFC has repeatedly said no HG's.

So leagaly my 870 with 5 round of either 00 buck or slugs with a short barrel would be next.

But it would be fun to go to the trap range with a 12.5 barrel with chokes and bust a couple of clays.

I have shot a ported 14 inch barreled Valtro, didn't have that bad of muzzle blast. All depends on what you are used to.

.454 Cassul isn't that bad in my books so VMMY.
