"Replacing old vehicles with new vehicles should be the single most important agenda item for any policy maker hoping to positively impact the environment," that was the statement made by Dennis DesRosiers, head of DesRosiers Automotive Consultants.
"Older vehicles are, by a large margin, the least fuel-efficient and highest-polluting road users," DesRosiers said in a commentary, noting that 53 per cent of Canada's passenger cars and 64 per cent of its light trucks currently survive 15 years of active ownership.
"The sooner they disappear, the sooner some of our environmental targets will be met."

Yeah. How we supposed to buy a new $40,000 Prius when we spend all our money on a moron government?
The self-defeating nature of the Air Care program, fuel taxes, GST, enviro levies, et cetera.

For the amount I drive a month due to being on the highway for work all the time it doesn't matter what I own, it still won't pollute nearly as much as a hybrid which commutes. My Ranger 4.0L 4x4 averages around 15 mpg (which is grossly terrible for a V6) but if I'm lucky I may fill it up once a month... I've gone 2 months on a tank of gas before.... Basically, I'm gone from home an average of 28 - 29 days a month so these green peace a-holes can kiss my ass because the second I fire up the work truck I've burnt more fuel than their commy POS hybrid does all day but I don't hear them complaining AFTER I've delivered my load to the stores so they can have their convenience... Sorry for my rant, I'm still downing my first coffee of the day :redneck

Uh, what do you suggest? We buy only used cars that never wear out? Just keep what we've got going ad infinitum? You do understand that's impossible, don't you?

But yeah: this NEW CAR EVERY YEAR! attitude is crap. We're basically talking about attrition replacement, which could be speeded up if the government wasn't taking all our money all the time.

Of course a nice power-to-weight-ratio tax could help with a lot of things. You don't need 300 HP in a Honda, and you can't haul 5 tons in one either.

I'm mad that my new 'more economical' truck I bought to replace my 'gas guzzler' isn't as efficient as the old one! Think I'll put the '88 Corolla back on the road and get 30 mpg instead of 15.

:laugh :laugh :laugh

Where do you think this guy's paycheque comes from? Surely its not derived from the sales generated in keeping used cars on the road. :shakehead:

Nobody remembers that Re-Use s one of the three R's? :confused2

BTW: Why is there no push to use recycled engine oil anymore? :confused2

De Rosiers can lick my nut sack. There is no way I'm going to pay more for insurance and pay retail prices for a brand new car. My DD is paid for, cost's $81 a month to insure, and I only burn about $140 a month in gas.
The government's enviroment target is a total white wash in the trucking industry. Big diesels are creating far less NOX now , but they are burning more fuel due to the new emission controls on the engines. Go figure that one out.

I always find it interesting how much 'they' want for these fancy hybrids.
For example, a recent brochrei I received from Toyota :

Prius uses 4 litres per 100k city and highway for $37,000

Yaris uses something like 7/5 per 100 for about $15,000.

thats a lot of freaking gas one can buy for $22,000.

And my rush hour rat racer Echo is going strong at 195000 km and gets over 40 mpg...I'm not buying any new car soon. Although I'd guess that article isnt directed at me. My fj40 gets 13 mpg tho! :redneck

Well if anyone is thinking of "dumping" their old car... if its in the 70's or older then i might want it! Classic cars and demo derbys is my thing and i'm always hunting for new (old) metal! Only Canadian/American cars please! Better to let someone have some fun with it or make some parts available to someone restoring their classic than to just send it to the crusher.... :poke:

How much polution is created in building a new car? vs keeping an old one around a little bit longer?

My 2 cents
