Car makers are preparing for a North American invasion of diesel-fuelled vehicles that will compete against the hybrids for fuel efficiency and performance. First up is Mercedes' E320 BlueTec which will go on sale on October 16, 2006. Priced only USD$1000 higher than its gasoline-powered counterpart, the BlueTec will be "the world's cleanest diesel," according to Mercedes-Benz. The 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 achieves this distinction by adopting a system-wide approach to reducing emissions: computer-controlled common-rail injection, variable boost turbocharger, and emissions gas re-circulation reduce the creation of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust system; a catalytic converter reduces carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust; and a particulate filter removes the soot. Together, these technologies form Mercedes' BlueTec system.

Diesels rule,
Was in Ireland in September and rented an 06 Renault laguna with a 1.9 turbo diesel with a six speed manual tranny, This "family"car was a Rocket with amazing power, on one stretch of quiet hwy i reached 130 MPH and it still wanted to go.
It would beat any stock honda civic off the line hands down
And the best of all is the fuel economy two tanks in twenty days at about 55 litres per.

NEVER EVER EVER BUY AN EX-RENTAL CAR

That's all well and good, but to me it seems that the only thing available in diesel is going to be high end sedans or low end SUVs, in addition to your typical diesel powered trucks and such. None of those is appealing to me at all. I mean, if you can afford a Mercedes, why are you worried about gas prices, and if you want to be environmental, you probably wouldn't drive a Mercedes to begin with.

That isnt exactly true. Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Audi, VW are all bringing in diesels. Dont any of those float your boat?
