FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Starting in 2008, Volkswagen (VOWG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research), its premium unit Audi, BMW (BMWG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) and Mercedes aim to launch and market Bluetec in the world's largest car market, where diesel has a market share of just 5 percent versus 50 percent in western Europe.
That "largest car market" is North America (the United States, to be specific). With the full Bluetec system, these diesels are expected to meet the EPA's Tier 2 Bin 5 and California's LEV II emissions requirements for light duty vehicles. The complete system includes the use of the AdBlue urea solution injection system which dramatically reduces NOx emissions by converting it to nitrogen and water. Meeting LEV II requirements is crucial because it means these diesels can be sold in all 50-states, the most important being California.
