OK....I'll kick off the forum. Who's a ham? When did you get your first call sign? What call signs do you presently hold? What qualifications do you hold?
VE7DLN, I wrote my basic exam in 2000 and passed my 5WPM morse test in 2001.

I'm too shy to give my call sign (WHY do they make everyone's address public??). I've got Basic +. At some point, I wouldn't mind trying morse just in case I get trapped in a mine cave-in. ;-)
More seriously, using Morse means I could really reach out and touch someone without spending a lot of money on what would essentially be an emergency radio. And then just buy a single band VHF car unit for the more common usage.
Hmm...maybe I should spin this off into another thread.
I got my license last year and bought an ICOM VHF hand held. Now I want to get a vehicle-mount unit that I can leave in the Jeep.

VA7GRF I passed my exam last December, basic +. And what a suprise i used my initials for my call sign. I bought a cheep handheld and have been having alot of fun with it this year. I've got 3 antennas now and only want more. My cb hasn't worked in a while but i have been able to contact people from most locations i have ventured to in the last year.

VE7MUK in 1991 and purchased a IC-W2A, that was back when you had to pay $25 a year for station licenses.
Now VA7CTD, kind of goes with the truck, no? Even got a HAM plate on the truck for only $18.
The W2A handheld still works after all these years all though the battery doesn't hold a charge near as long as it used to. Now have a IC-2200 in the truck.
Just a basic qualification. Do you still need code to get into HF stuff? Although I probably don't really need to get into it just curious.

Since you obtained basic prior to 2000, you're grandfathered into having Basic +.....and therefore have HF access.

Oh no, so now I can spend more cash on radio's? :cwm36:
Edit,
So when I do a call sign search for myself it shows qualifications of basic. But there is a (+) beside my name. How do I confirm that I have HF access?

VE7SSK. I took the test early this year, and scored high enough to get the basic HF.
I haven't bought a rig yet... am I still eligible? :violin

That's it. The terms are now Basic (30MHz up), + (full spectrum), Morse (full spectrum and foreign reciprocal operation on HF where code is required), Advanced (other stuff...).
And yeah....get the chequebook out!!!!!!

Thats the part that bugged me about it when I thought about getting a radio license many years ago.
I just wanted it so I could get the license plate. Unfortunately the license plate quickly leads to your name and residential adress.
I know Larry's call sign, nah na na nah nah nah.........

I'm sure that 99.9999999% of the ****rats out there have no idea how to find your address from a ham plate.
On another note (and I know this from personal experience) many police members don't even know what a ham plate is! I've had a number of members ask what kind of plate that is.

I know I know, I shouldn' t be so sensitive for a guy who's jeep shows up when you type his name into google
but somehow it bothers me that every radio operator is so easily contacted

I wonder if there's a way to get them to NOT list your address?

Change it to a mail box or work addy. :cwm10:

Looks like a PO box is a valid mailing adress. A mailing adress looks like all thats required.
go figure, industry Canada has only a PO box
Amateurs are reminded of Section 14 of Radiocommunication Information
Circular 2 (RIC-2), which states: "The holder of an Amateur Radio Operator
Certificate shall notify the Department within thirty (30) days with respect
to a change of mailing address."
Please note that this refers to a MAILING address and that it is not an
option but a requirement.
Contact the Industry Canada Amateur Radio Service Centre at:
Industry Canada Amateur Radio Service Centre
P.O. Box 9654 Postal Station "T"

Yep, I can confirm that a PO box is ok. I sent in my mailing address notification last night and this morning, they confirmed receipt and said the change should take effect within 48 hrs.

I've yet to do it. I keep forgetting.

There is a very active Ham club here in the Okanagan, I mainly got my Ham license so I could be better at comms for Search and Rescue.

Three members of our Ham club joined Mission SAR to provide comms, etc. Was a very good match.

VE7XTR - AKA - Steve.. Hardly on much, my car and rig were stolen, with my handheld in the glove box.. i've got a spare htx-242 but i need an antenna and a truck to put it in.. hopefully ICBC will pay out soon so i can get that rolling..
On a side note, I've been polluting the airwaves with a basic ticket since 1996, at the ripe age of 13 then.. Also in case some of you have been hams for a while, you may have spoken with my father VE7IDK (Arnd), who now resides in the okanogan area.

email <spectrum.amateur@ic.gc.ca> and request they remove your address from view. I had a reply within the hour that it had been done.

Basic but as I got my liscence probably 20 years back sounds like I get the basic + qualification !
I have Three handhelds (two Icom and one yuesu) and one 2 meter mobile(icom) !
Im lookin to goin to dual band handhelds and a dual band mobile to be able to cross band repeat !
I got my Ham for the safety factor when hunting in remote areas as back then there wasnt much out in the way of cell phone repeaters and lots of dead space !
There are many spots that the Ham repeators give coverage where theres nothing else :)

So I have to admit when I first read the post Off-road Frequency, Part II, I thought it was 144.440 but after some of the replys I did a quick reread and Doh!! it is 146.440 and I see that it is in the lead, I think I even voted for that ....redfaced...., so how long does the poll run before we call a winner?
