Hunt says Wrangler has gotten more ad support in the magazine since the debut of the gay soap "Queer As Folk" – the inspiration of Showtime’s popular U.S. series – because a principle character drives (recklessly) a Wrangler.

Brian Rees, a Chrysler Jeep spokesman in London, says that going after the "pink pound" as the gay dollar is called there, was a natural from the beginning. "You’ve got a group of people who are affluent, independent and confident – the same qualities as the brand – it’s been an obvious fit," says Rees.

Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, Jeep reappeared in the United Kingdom about eight year ago after an absence. Rees says "by that time, it would have been odd to ignore the gay market. These days, it’s just not an issue."

Reese notes that Jeep is particularly strong in the gay market, representing up to a third of sales -- however as an import, only 400 Jeep Wranglers are sold in the UK annually. Grand Cherokee sales are more significant, at 4,500 a year.

Asked if gay marketing was a concern for the vehicle’s macho image, Rees offers, "some people see it as a macho vehicle, and some people see it as a gay icon vehicle. For some reason, one doesn’t seem to negate the other. For us, it’s just a market we should go after."

And if you think I'm sore about your Jeep and gay bashing, you got it half right. My Jeep deserves no respect (and I sure as he!! don't give it any :D), but gay people do. What if one of your kids grows up and realizes they prefer the same sex? You'd alter your thinking and vocabulary for that scenario so why not put in a little more effort and make your jokes with a little more class?

It's illegal to make fun of Gays in canada.

I find that funny...but can you imagine an ad where the gag was that it was making reference to an infamous female rape scene, like maybe a scene from The Accused? It's curious how it's funny one way and extremely offensive in the other. Hmm...I think I just went veering off-topic.

Mature and educated people who are working in the psychology field will be quick to point out the fact that the mental condition 'h o m ophobia' is actually a person who is scared and insecure of their choice in sexuality.
Lashing out against a gay is acted out because the offending person is insecure that they too might have gay tendencies.
I feel comfortable in my desire for sex with females, so therefore I feel comfortable having a conversation with a gay person ,or being in the same room as a gay person.

I was in Pisa a couple weeks ago, and posed for a picture that looks like my hand is on the leaning tower. What does that tell you about my secret desires? Or maybe that longer fishing rod I bought? Or maybe my plan to buy bigger tires next tax return?

Could there possibly be people in this world that view h o m o s e x u a l i t y as wrong, and are disturbed by it? Could it be possible that I don't want my son to grow up with the misconception that it is OK? Could it be possible that if someone (school?) tries to get him to accept it as normal, I will kick their @$$?

I am sure there are a few others like me on this somewhat redneck bbs that view h o m o s e x u a l i t y as a choice that creepy wierd people make, and when given a chance to laugh about it, and call jeep owners gay, do so because it is funny.

Disclaimer: I used to have an '89 jeep Comanche, but had to sell it when I didn't have the funds, space, experience to keep it going. I LOVED that 4.0, and can only imagine what the High Output engines would be like. A much nicer engine then my Nissan 3.0 thats for sure. One day I will buy a ~72 CJ with a 304 to rebuild with my son.
