Read this post on a TDI board:
"We were on an isolated mountain dirt road in my 2005 Jetta TDI (old body style) when I hit a rock. We only went 200 feet down and turned right at a Y in the road. I stopped because we saw some animals down the left portion of the Y in the road. Wondering what kind of animals we were looking at I put the car in reverse and noticed I was leaking oil. We turned around and followed the oil leak back to the rock that cracked the pan. So off we went going at a much higher rate of speed to get back to the main paved road and cell phone access, hoping those cows on the side of the road stay were they are. We had around 12 miles before hitting pavement and the oil light came on and also the buzzer. We made it back to the paved road but still no cell phone access so we tried for the nearest town. Thats is when the battery light came on and the engined just died. The temperture gauge always read normal temp, the needle never moved a bit beyond normal. So did I destroy the engine? When I opened the hood there was nothing to indicate an over heated engine. If the engine is fine then why did it die? Is there an oil sensor that tells the car all oil is lost and to shut down the engine? We hitched a ride back to the nearest town and call some friends to pick us up.Thanks for any info."

Poor bastard. BTW, a replacement motor (TDI PD) is very expensive.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Expensive too.

I did that once, except, after the thunk from the rock, I stopped and shut the van off. I then watched all the oil drain out and called a tow truck. Some people are just unbelievably stupid when it comes to cars!

LOL As soon as he followed the oil trail back to the rock and discovered that the rock had in fact cracked the oil pan and he kept on driving, I would have lost any meager bit of pity I would have originally (or possibly) had right then and there.. Dumbass!

I showed this thread to my brother and he mentioned a story about a fellow who wanted to do a quick port polish on his Subaru WRX, so he got a bag of sand blasting sand and disassembled the intake on the car and with it running stuffed the intake hose into the bag of sand and to make a long story short, you can imagine what it did to the engine. He apparently told the dealership what he did when he went in to get the motor replaced on warranty and couldn't figure out why they wouldn't replace it for him :laugh

Gosh, I wish my oil light had come on when the pump failed! Instead, there was a brief knocking sound that lasted a few seconds before the engine seized. Of course I was going 110 on Highway 1 at the time - not much time to react to anything at that speed.
I'd say they were really lucky to get as far as they did.
I'd also say they ought to read the damn owner's manual sometime, especially the part about warning lights.
