Charges Laid for Damage to Wetlands in Kamloops Area

This release is posted on behalf of the “E” Division Forest Crime Investigation Unit.

Kamloops, BC: Charges have been laid against a TV station manager, the owner of a tire company and the company itself in connection with damage to the Duffy Lake recreation site in August 2005, the RCMP and B.C. Forest Service announced today.

On July 13, 2006, charges of Obstruct Justice and Obstructing a Peace Officer were laid against Bruce Uptigrove, general sales manager at CFJC-TV7, who allegedly withheld video footage from officers investigating the incident.

This week, an investigation by the B.C. Forest Service has resulted in charges under the Forest and Range Practices Act against Kamloops Tire Ltd. (also known as Excel Tire) and company owner Jeffery Dale O’Connor for damage to natural resources, unauthorized business activity and public disturbance at a recreation site.

The investigation, conducted by Compliance and Enforcement officers of the B.C. Forest Service, found evidence that environmental damage may have occurred while a CFJC-TV7 camera crew was filming a tire commercial for Kamloops Tire Ltd. It is alleged that four four-wheel drive trucks repeatedly drove through the wetland on the north end of Duffy Lake, creating an enormous mud hole and leaving tire ruts on the lakeshore adjacent to the camping area.

Duffy Lake Recreation Site, located about half an hour east of Kamloops, is a popular location for camping and fishing.

If they did indeed damage wetlands by driving where they should not be driving, damn rights they should be charged.

I don't agree with holding the film company for obstruction though

I read about this earlier in the week, and I hope the people get what's coming to them. I've never liked the management at CFJC, and you really have to wonder why they'd try to withhold footage from the authorities (guilty perhaps?). The news story I read said that a caretaker at Duffy Lake noticed the damage area and assumed it was vandals, until he saw the commercial and recognized the area.

I hope they sock it to them! Tearing up sensitive areas, taping it, and then refusing to turn over said tape = BUSTED!

When will people learn that if your gonna do stupid stuff, DON'T FILM IT. And if you're filming a TV commercial, DON'T DO STUPID STUFF.

God I miss the days of common sense.

I saw the commercial that they made - kinda funny actually

They show this big ford (I think) climbing up on a stump with the front left tire, and the left rear is lifting off the ground. all show and no flex. LOL!

the commercial doesn't show them ripping up any land though...

CN basically got its pee pee slapped for killing all those fish and subsequent derailments. These guys will probably get Life.
