Is that a Beretta CX4 Storm?
Ahhhh, followed the link and sure enough. The Province today was giving the impression it was a 'machine gun'.

I have heard reference to a bolt action Lee Enfield being referred to as an assault weapon before by the media. But a semiautomatic carbine is a bit of a stretch into a machine gun.

LOL Sadly enough, that was the first thing to go through my mind, too. Beretta 9mm rifle, accepts standard Beretta 9mm magazines, actually a sweet little piece, I've fired off a couple. And no, they're only semi-auto, not fully.

Yes but to you and I they have to be pinned to 5 rounds, correct?
With they way they have been shutting down all the ranges around the GVRD soon there will not be any place to shoot restricted f/a's.

Have any articles called it an assault rifle or "high powered rifle" yet?

I have only seen 'machine gun'.
I am not aware of any machine gun chambered in 9 mm, .40 S&W or .45 ACP.

Nope, you can have them pinned at 10 rounds just like a pistol (that's what my SIG Sauer P226 9mm is, legally aquired in Canada like so). And I really don't think you can consider anything 9mm to be "high powered", I know you can get some wicked aftermarket rounds for them but good luck up here, even on the black market.
They're actually a neat like gun, fairly compact (smaller than a rifle), light weight and as far as I remember they aren't restricted. Being a gun that size firing a 9mm round there's very minimal recoil so they're very accurate for target use, good for training IMO (for poeple who take their kids out shooting). Plus, 9mm's very cheap to fire.

Carbines have the same mag restrictions as semi auto rifles. They are also a restricted f/a.

What is not considered 'high power'? A .22 lr will still put a whole in an object at distance.

I thought it was supposed to happen before 2007.
The Bill to Abolish the Long-Gun Registry would free Canadians from the requirement to register non-restricted firearms (hunting rifles and shotguns). Some legal requirements would remain in place for the owners of non-restricted firearms. Also, the gun registry would remain in place for restricted and prohibited firearms.
Introduction of Bill to Abolish the Long-Gun Registry:
June 19, 2006
Official Title:
An Act to amend the Criminal Code and the Firearms Act (non-registration of firearms that are neither prohibited nor restricted)
Summary of Bill to Abolish the Long-Gun Registry:
This bill would repeal the requirement for Canadian owners of long guns to register hunting rifles and shotguns.
Although owners would not have to register their long guns, other legal requirements would stay in place:
* long-gun owners would require a valid firearms license to purchase or possess firearms and to purchase ammunition
* long-gun owners would be required to go through police safety checks
* long-gun owners would still be required to pass safety training
* current owners would be required to verify that a potential purchaser or another new owner of their non-restricted firearm has a valid firearms license by contacting the Chief Firearms Officer.
Individuals would continue to be required to register prohibited and restricted firearms, such as handguns.
A one-year amnesty for long-gun owners is in place until May 17, 2007 to protect some long-gun owners from prosecution of offences related to not registering long guns.
This is getting confusing:confused:
